When it comes to hair colour, it’s usually not the shape, fabric or design of your clothes that matter but the colour combinations you use in your day to day styling. Many people who dye their hair a different colour suddenly realise that a lot of their favourite clothes don’t look so good on them anymore.

Knowing which colours work with your hair can save you from a major fashion faux pas. You may have to experiment at first, but you’ll soon be able to tell which colours really work for you.

Here are my golden rules and suggestions...

Brunette

If you are a brunette then try to avoid pastel and pale colour as they can leave you looking washed out. Equally, too much grey and black can look drab and dowdy on a brunette. That’s not to say you can’t wear it, but just remember to jazz it up with a rich coloured scarf, belt or broach.

Jewel colours are a brunette’s best friend. Opt for emerald greens, deep berry purples, ruby reds and sapphire blues. Some of the best dressed brunette celebrities are often pictured on the red carpet in these colours.

Think of Catherine Zeta Jones and Natalie Portman for inspiration. Mango has a gorgeous rich blue knit fitted dress with draped detail at the waist, rounded neck and wide straps. A great number to wear in the office or on a night out if you team it with the right heels. RRP £44.99.

For a more casual look try these slim fit pop fabric jeans in red, great for a casual look on the weekends. RRP £39.99

Zara jeans

Finally Next have a stunning emerald green top with eye catching sequin detail. This piece is great as it can be worn with flats and jeans or dressed up with heels and smart blazer. £28.

Red Hair

Red hair brings out its own fire and makes a very strong statement; therefore bold block colours would suit you best and most shades of green can be very flattering. Navy blue and dark purple with blue undertones are must have items for every red-tressed woman. Black also works wonders for red heads as it brings out the fiery red tones in your hair.

If opting for neutral colours, stick to dark crèmes and tan colours. These neutral snake print skinny jeans from Karen Millen teamed with a bold black shirt are a perfect example of what a red head can get away with. RRP £75

You would be surprised but pink can be surprisingly flattering with red hair. Try and steer clear from yellowy-greens, oranges and deep reds as these can clash (and not in a good way!).

This timeless, navy blue, silk maxi dress by Ted Baker would look stunning on a red head. The pleated bodice detailing gives great shape for most figures. RRP £229.

Blonde

If you’re a classic blonde, soft pastel colours complement your complexion and look stunning on you. They add a delicate lightness and touch of femininity to your overall appearance. Look for pale yellows, peaches, pinks and turquoise. Zara has a fantastic range of pastels. This pale pink blouse with a lace neckline is a great find for the office.RRP £29.99.

Cream coloured items are a must have for any blonde's wardrobe. White is your most flattering colour, think Marilyn Monroe. Golds work fabulously for blondes as well. Charlize Theron has often been pictured at events in glamorous gold outfits (and remember that famous fragrance advert!). This Coast Duanna Lace Dress is a great buy for parties and weddings. RRP £150.
