Spring/Summer 2012 saw models at London Fashion Week with neutral palettes of makeup for the face and eyes, whilst lips were awash with a contrasting pop of vivid colour rather than the dark and heavy shades seen last season. An unashamedly bright lipstick is sure to get you noticed and this season’s hottest shades are pillarbox-red, neon pink, vibrant coral and electric orange as seen at Jen Kao, Yves Saint Laurent and Jason Wu.

This eye-catching trend is perfect for those who wish to vamp up their makeup look quickly and easily. It’s the best way to simply transform a natural, daytime look into an elegant, yet glamorous evening style. For those of you after a high impact makeup look, follow in the footsteps of Jason Wu who opted for bright orange-red lipstick lined with an incredible ruby red pencil.

To achieve this look begin by lining the lips with this ultra-silk scarlet liner from Natio This product is long-lasting and won’t feather or smudge to give your lips a fuller, poutier appearance. Next, use this show-stopping lipstick from Mac in Morange which will add both colour and texture to the lips. Finish by adding a few dabs of Mac Pigment in Neo-orange with your finger to your lips for added oomph! Don’t forget to pop the products in your handbag in case you need to top up during the evening.

For those of you who favour daring red, kissable lips, ensure that they are well conditioned before applying any product. Start by taking an old bristle toothbrush and gently rubbing the lips to remove any dead skin and create a smooth base to work on. Next, use the Lip Primer Potion from Urban Decay which is an invisible primer which ensures that you achieve a smoother, long-lasting, non-fading lip colour. The unique formula also includes SPF 15 and moisturising vitamins A, C and E to protect and perfect your pout from the summer sun.

Next, gently apply a little concealer to the outer corners of your mouth to prevent your lipstick bleeding. I love the High Impact Lip Colour SPF15 from Clinique in Sassy Spice. This incredibly moisturising, long-wearing lipstick will protect lips whilst adding an eye-popping burst of colour, designed to last for up to 8 hours.

If the edges of your lips need perfecting, use a lip brush and start at the outer corners on both the top and bottom, working your way into the centre in one fluid motion. If you make any mistakes, carefully trace along the outside of the lip line with a small, rigid brush dipped in your foundation.

My top tips for achieving beautiful, statement lips this season, is to ensure that your lips are kiss-proof by covering the finished lip with a thin layer of tissue and gently dusting translucent powder on top. If you are worried that your lips are a little thin and this is putting you off making them a statement, then fake a fuller pout. Using Benefit Highbeam for fairer skin tones and Benefit Moonbeam if you have a darker complexion, carefully dot the product just above your lip line within the Cupid’s bow, to give the impression of full lips.

Finally, if you are going for a show-stopping lip, keep your eyes and skin fairly neutral. Just a slick of mascara and a flick of eyeliner is all you require!
