Music halls in the past used to encourage attendees to dress up in the style of whatever show they were going to see. This week I went to see Rock of Ages and standing in front of my wardrobe trying to decide what to wear, trying to make the effort to dress up for the occasion, all I could see was a wall of pastel colours and tea dresses.

Being the least Rock'n'Roll person I know - I'm more Al Bowlly than Aerosmith - I had no choice than to go for a floral number and just hope I wasn't the only one who hadn't adopted a rock look for the event. Luckily when I rocked up (sorry couldn't resist) to the Shaftsbury Theatre after work I wasn't greeted by a swarm of leather and ripped jeans- phew!

Once we were seated a steward handed us LED lights in the shape of lighters. Without explanation, I could only assume that we would be urged to use these during the slower numbers and as the lights went down I clung onto mine, eagerly waiting to use it.

About a second in and I was in fits of laughter. A large video screen showed a typical 80s hair metal guy giving the "please turn your phones off during the performance" message, going onto say that people who text during productions look like "douchebags". Setting the tone of the evening I knew I was in for a comedy filled, 80s cheese-fest and I'm not even ashamed to say that I was very excited!

By the time it got to the interval my sides hurt. I laughed out loud pretty much the whole way through and when I wasn't laughing I was singing along to hits such as "We Built This City" and "Here I Go Again". And when I wasn't singing or laughing I was waving my lighter LED light in the air.

The second half was just as funny. Justin Lee Collins, Shayne Ward, Oliver Tompsett and Natalie Andreou gave great performances but Simon Lipkin just shone playing the slightly immature, rock (and boob) obsessed narrator. The ensemble and smaller roles were also played very well by Zizi Strallen, Carly Mercedes Dyer and Ian McIntosh, to name but a few.

As the full cast sung "Don't Stop Believing" and canon confetti showered the crowd signifying the end, I was already thinking about how much I wanted to see it again.

If you are looking for a really fun night out then Rock of Ages is perfect! In my opinion it's better than We Will Rock You, mainly due to the high level of fun factor.

One of the last lines of the show was "The dreams you come into The Strip with aren't always the ones you leave with." And I can say that I went into the theatre not knowing what to expect and came out checking ticket availability for the next show on my phone!

A truly fun, 80s cheese filled evening. And I loved every bit!

Rock of Ages is at the Shaftsbury theatre. For tickets visit
