Breakfast, lunch and dinner are awfully mundane, don’t you think? We find the real excitement of eating lies in in-between meals. Brunch, a midnight feast, scrummy afternoon tea…

The latter – with is delicate savouries and sugary fancies – has always been a favourite of us Young Ladies About Town. Trouble is, like a good deal of the population, the overdose of gluten doesn’t always go down too smoothly. To be frank, it’s terribly hard to feel glamorous with a ballooned belly.

Happily, the charming folk at Pantry at 108 have come up with a solution to this culinary conumdrum: afternoon tea which is gluten free! The crust-less sandwiches are created with soft, slightly sweet, gluten-free bread, and contain all the best fillings. The scones are wonderfully dense and moist, and are served with divine jam and vanilla infused clotted cream. It is the cakes which take the proverbial biscuit, however, with a plentiful selection which includes both chocolate and fruit flavours (absolutely crucial).

The tea selection is equally delightful. You choose your loose leafs from a rustic-looking tea box and they transform it into a perfect brew in a china teapot. Word of warning: one sip of their Earl Grey could ruin tea bags for you forever.

As if a gluten-free afternoon tea wasn’t saintly enough, we were pleased to discover it is also low on the dairy and sugar front. Buoyed by our newfound healthful-ness we opted to top off our tea with some of the smoothies from The Juicery. The Graceful Greens, created by Notting Hill nutritionist Amelia Freer, is an especially delectable concoction.

We whiled away the afternoon, reclining on the colourful cushioned seats, all the while marvelling what a pleasure it is to indulge without feeling uncomfortably full. For us Young Ladies, this multi-course meal will undoubtedly become a matter of course…
