Strictly Come Dancing

The dance marathon is back to kick up a storm

Written by Ben Felsenburg

‘It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all,’ was Dr Johnson’s immortal verdict on both a dog walking on its hind legs, and – in that distant era – a woman preaching. To that list we might add a politician dancing, but now here comes Ed Balls on Strictly Come Dancing (Friday, BBC1, 9pm), stumbling back onto the stage after a shaky debut on the launch show.

The former Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer boasts a first from Oxford in philosophy, politics and economics, but even with that Ben-Felsenburg-colour-176considerable intellect and an able tutor in the shape of his dance partner Katya Jones, he’s going to have to go some to bother the judges for the weightier marks.

Yet that’s the delight of strictly: beauty is in the eye of the viewer, and we’ll all have our own special favourites out of the 15 celebrities, even if the rest of the world might query why you’re championing some C-lister born with the incurable condition doctors call ‘two left feet’. The star the bookies favour is, understandably, Will Young, as adept at hoofing on the West End Stage as he has been a confident prince of pop. Louise Redknapp is another contestant who should find it all too easy, given her years in showbiz, while the presence of TV judge Robert Rinder is – dare one say it? – something of a crime against choreography.

Me? There’s only one dancer I’ll be rooting for – it has to be Birds of a Feather’s Lesley Joseph. Come on Dorien!
