Close to the Enemy

Stephen Poliakoff hits the target with new war drama

Written by Ben Felsenburg

Settling down to a new drama from Stephen Poliakoff may not be quite Russian roulette, but you never know quite what you’re going to get from the writer- director who’s been dazzling and occasionally disappointing audiences for some 40 years.Ben-Felsenburg-colour-176

Sometimes he’s so good he must make other filmmakers despair – witness Caught On A Train starring Peggy Ashcroft, or shooting The Past. But then there are the shows which have left viewers in despair. Did anyone stick all the way through to the end of Dancing On The Edge, even if the mix of Jazz Age antics and royal intrigue couldn’t be faulted for lack of ambition? So, let joy be unconfined, for the good news to report is that his latest one hits the ground running from the start.

Close To The Enemy (BBC2, Thursday, 9pm) sweeps us back to 1946, and that moment when Britain was gathering itself back together amid the rubble of the Second World War. Dashing Captain Callum Ferguson (Jim Sturgess) is six weeks away from demob, but the army has given the intelligence officer one last task: to persuade a German scientist to work for the British in the race to develop the weapons of the next war.

From these beginnings Poliakoff weaves a compelling saga of a nation longing for peace and looking to an uncertain future. Co-starring Lindsay Duncan, Charlotte Riley and Alfred Molina, here’s a feast of storytelling that brings history to life thanks to generous helpings of brainpower, style and flair.
