Modern British life is laid bare in this gripping drama

Written by Ben Felsenburg

Spectaculars, along comes a story about the way we live now. What will they think of next?Ben-Felsenburg-colour-176

NW (BBC2, Monday, 9pm) is blessed with the kind of strong characters and pulsating, vivid detail that has made dickens so enduring. Adapted from Zadie Smith’s novel, it’s a tale of two very different friends living in a north-west London district where council-estate poverty and the gentrification of fine Victorian houses rub up against each other.

The striking Nikki Amuka- Bird stars as Natalie, a young black woman and successful lawyer possessed of uncommon self-confidence (outwardly, at least), whose upward trajectory seems unstoppable, even if underneath it all she harbours a gnawing discontent. Her friend leah (Phoebe Fox), a charity worker, is an altogether more delicate soul: she’s so naive she even falls for the ruse of a woman from the council estate opposite knocking at the door and asking for money for a cab to visit a sick parent in hospital.

From that moment, wheels are set in motion and the fragile wall that divides different classes in Britain in 2016 threatens to collapse and wreak devastation on Leah’s happy existence with her dishy French husband Michel. Here is a tale that’ll take you down streets where you might choose not to go, but it is as truthful a snapshot of the nation as you’ll see this year and you’ll be held rapt throughout the 90 minutes.
