Celebrity Carry On Barging

All aboard the celebrity barge with ‘Captain’ Havers

Written by Ben Felsenburg
There is a fine line between lounge lizard, rogue, roué and rake. Wherever the right side lies, there you’ll find Nigel Havers, whose seductive louche charm and ready Ben-Felsenburg-colour-176mischievous smile make him the ideal gentleman guest whatever the occasion. In Celebrity Carry On Barging (Friday, Channel 5, 8pm) he’s off for a holiday on the canals of west England as part of a line-up that would make for an extraordinary dinner party, never mind a week-long waterborne gallivant.

That luvviest of thesps, Simon Callow, brings along his glorious velvety rumbling tones, Debbie McGee begins to shake off the woes of widowhood after the death of Paul Daniels last year, and Lorraine Chase exudes a youthful sheen that belies her 65 years – perhaps the happy result of her defiant long singledom. But it’s Havers who most embodies the party spirit, aided and abetted by bringing along his delightfully affable dog Alfie, plus he has the very good sense to pack his bags mostly with bottles of fine wines.

All aboard for jolly japes and good company, plus the inevitable slapstick as our barging novices come unstuck negotiating their way through the locks. And it’s a night of Havers heaven as the star reveals all in Piers Morgan’s Life Stories (Friday, ITV, 9pm) – almost literally as he recounts his early career as a life model. But as he opens up about his private life we discover a darker side to the happy-go-lucky persona. I guess that’s actors for you.
