WHAT: 15th British Silent Film Festival. In a year of renaissance for silent films, this annual festival features a packed programme of the very best British titles alongside musical accompaniment.

WHAT: Chipping Norton Literary Festival. The first ever festival offers an array of literary workshops and panel events and features a string of famous names, including Sir Andrew Motion, Joanna Trollope, Colin Dexter and Prue Leith.

WHAT: Sea Odyssey – A Giant Spectacular. The world’s greatest street theatre company, Royal De Luxe, are putting on the UK’s biggest street theatre event. Their play, Sea Odyssey, will be performed on the streets of Liverpool with their iconic 34ft ‘giant’ characters.

WHAT: The Royal Portraits Exhibition. A collection of original drawings by Alexei Maximov of the Queen, the Queen Mother and members of the royal families of Europe, on display to celebrate their 20th anniversary and commemorate the Diamond Jubilee.

WHAT: The Vogue Festival 2012. Vogue magazine hosts two days of talks, performances, film screenings, debates and workshops featuring some of the biggest names in fashion, including Matthew Williamson, Mary Portas and Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman.

WHAT: Shakespeare’s Birthday Celebrations. Celebrated for nearly 200 years, Stratford’s festivities will include live performances, parades through the streets and screenings of past productions.

WHAT: Virgin London Marathon. The UK’s biggest running event enters its 32nd year with 35,000 runners expected, all in need of moral support from the estimated one million spectators set to line the streets.

WHAT: Hidden Heroes – The Genius of Everyday Things. An exhibition recognising the everyday inventions we couldn’t live without, presented alongside sketches by inventors, patent specifications and original adverts.

WHAT: Victoria Revealed. Explores the life and reign of Queen Victoria with important paintings, jewellery, clothing and historic objects including her wedding dress, displayed for the first time in a decade, and archive footage of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

WHAT: Future Cinema presents Bugsy Malone. Step into Fat Sam’s Grand Slam for a film screening with a difference – an interactive world of gangsters, flappers and the biggest custard pie fight ever staged.
