What’s The Right Diet For You? A Horizon Special

After the festive feast, it’s time to participate in the annual famine

Ben-Felsenburg-portrait-176‘God make me good,’ proffered St Augustine, ‘but not yet.’ Well I’m sorry folks, but the reckoning has come. Yes, we’ve feasted, gorged and binged, and now as we survey the last remnants of the extended Christmas blow-out the scales are telling their terrible tale. Happily, scientifi c help is at hand to beat away those January blues in What’s The Right Diet For You? A Horizon Special (BBC Two, Monday, 9pm).

The 75 overweight volunteers who have come forward for this three-month experiment in the new-fangled ideas about weight loss testify to the fallibility of diets as we know them. Echoing the old joke, ‘It’s easy to give up smoking – I’ve done it many times,’ nearly all of them have repeatedly tried out various regimes, without long-lasting success. This is where the experts come in.

As psychologist Tanya Byron and medic Chris Van Tulleken explain, the latest thinking is that diets should be tailor-made to suit your own particular DNA, hormones and personality.

But generally those who are packing the extra pounds are, it seems, divisible into three groups. There are the feasters, who lack the very particular hormone that tells you when you’re full. Then there are those who turn to food as a comfort in times of stress. Finally come the cravers, who are simply obeying their genetic imperative to keep on gorging. But for everyone hope is at hand, with spiffi ng ideas about how to acquire customised, healthier habits. Watch, but be warned: you’ll be left without any excuses.
