Radio Review: 10 April

Yes, he’s been naughty, but Jonathan Ross is radio gold

Written by Louis Barfe
Louis-Barfe-dog-176There’s an old rule among radio presenters: never let the bosses hire a stand-in who outshines you. Sadly, in the case of Steve Wright these days, that’s just about everyone, but Jonathan Ross coming in as his holiday relief must have Wrighty looking nervously at his contract.

Ross is that rarest of things, a TV personality who also turned out to be superb at radio, and it’s so nice to have him back on Radio 2. He’s a natural: sharp and quick-witted, yet warm. I found myself chuckling as he explained St Patrick’s Day to the listeners as being when ‘the Irish traditionally spend a day of quiet refl ection, reading some poetry, indulging in some quiet meditation, maybe having a glass of water or two to help them through it’.

A potentially problematic story of Ross’s cat eating some tinsel at Christmas and it resurfacing just before Hogmanay was told in such a way as to make the listeners text in rather than turn off in their droves. One told of a moggy who, instead of bringing in its usual harvest of mice and birds, one day brought home a red lace bra.

Then, the day after, there was Ross mentioning an article from the Daily Express, tying himself in knots of apology for doing so and explaining that ‘it used to be a newspaper’. I’ve forgotten what the article was about, but remembered Ross attempting to distance himself from the publication for comic effect.

Normally, I fi nd Radio 2 unlistenable between 2pm and 5pm, but I can take any amount of Ross blethering on, and wish that he could replace Wright permanently. Yes, I know he’s been a naughty boy in the past, but surely his time in the radio wilderness should be over by now?
