Escapades for Shed Heads

A joyous offering of quirky, souped-up sheds

Written by Ben Felsenburg

A woman must surely be the original inventor of the shed. My reasoning is that women like having houses, and husbands, but not necessarily situated together. Men can be such a bother messing things up in the kitchen, saying the wrong thing at dinner parties and generally being an untidy nuisance about the home. Much better keeping them out of harm’s way in the garden, and a kennel would be too cruelly small. Not that men are complaining: rather we’re revelling in the space (admittedly limited) and freedom, to judge by the evidence on view in Amazing Spaces: Shed Of The Year (Sunday, Channel 4, 8pm). Out of the 16 million sheds to be found in the gardens of Britain, the most brilliant contenders have been selected in the shortlist for the coveted title, as the series presented by the reassuringly commonsensical George Clarke returns.

An Ozymandias might gaze on in admiration at the ambition of the creations. Take, for example, the shed created by one Roy James on the unassuming Isle of Sheppey. ‘Dream City Railway’ proclaims the sign outside – and sprawling within is a virtual national rail network, in miniature. In Buckinghamshire, young Ben has a small shed that looks quite ordinary – until the roof slides back to reveal a monster of a telescope within his garden observatory. My favourite is the shed with a motor that wends its way along the Thames. Altogether this is a joyous offering of the best of British eccentricity.
