Radio Review: 28 August

The cost of tying the knot has become a burning issue

Written by Louis Barfe
Louis-Barfe-colour-176It’s still the silly season. I awoke to someone plugging their book on Today and found myself quietly wondering a) how the damn thing got published and b) why they were allowed on national radio to flog it. I mused in silence, having switched the radio off.

Then, at 9am, I gave Nicky Campbell a go on 5 live. The day’s burning issue was the cost of modern weddings and, knowing of some wedding organisers’ emotional blackmail, to say nothing of having friends who have still been paying for their special day long after the decree absolute had come through, I listened with interest.

One woman rang in with a disdainful tale of a friend’s wedding, which had evidently been a big production. The couple were entering into a mixed marriage: one Manchester United supporter, the other Manchester City. Everything was red or blue and guests were instructed to dress accordingly. Nicky’s caller was having none of it, and turned up in a floral dress. Nice one, Cheerful Charlie Chester.

The call was mildly entertaining, but I was left wondering how much more Danny Baker and/or Danny Kelly could have wrung out of it. Anyway, the happy couple had a nice time, apparently. Yes, love, that’s the point. It’s their day, not yours. If you can’t be bothered to make an effort, don’t go.

I’m all for modest wedding costs, personally. The biggest expense on my own wedding day was a free bar for 100 guests, a bill my grandfather footed gleefully. He was a man of impeccable priorities. Hats aloft, then, to the old boy who rang in to mark 70 years of wedded bliss, with recollections of a cardboard show cake that opened up like Thunderbird 2 to reveal pre-cut slices of whatever rationing would allow. I can see that idea making a comeback.
