Strictly Come Dancing

Strictly is back, with an intriguing line-up…

Written by Ben Felsenburg
Ben-Felsenburg-colour-176What will they say at Nonnatus House? For isn’t that Nurse Franklin strutting her stuff with risqué samba and salsa moves out on the dance floor? Yes, Call The Midwife’s Helen George is one of the squadron of stars signed up for Strictly Come Dancing (Saturday, BBC One, 7.15pm). As the irresistible prime-time concoction returns with its grand launch episode, the question is which of this year’s crop of celebrities promise the smooth style befitting glitzy entertainment – and which are likely to fall flat on their face, or at least incur the judges’ wrath.

Proms princess Katie Derham looks a good prospect to last the distance, and you wouldn’t be surprised to find lovely Ainsley Harriott negotiating his way across the dance floor with the same coordination and skill he brings to the kitchen. Olympic boxer Anthony Ogogo can draw upon his experience of the ring, but will he have met his match in Queen Vic landlady Linda – EastEnders star Kellie Bright?

Live performance should have no perils for pop star and Loose Women regular Jamelia, and The One Show reporter Anita Rani’s radiant cheer is bright enough to light up the glitterball. Meanwhile, for the joker in the pack, look no further than Jeremy Vine. With his lanky, animated presence, you could never fault him for lack of energy. I have a feeling that the sight of his long limbs exploding in all directions may have us gripped with jaw-dropped fascination in the coming weeks.
