My Life On A Plate

Brian Turner serves up a tasty afternoon treat

Written by Ben Felsenburg
Ben-Felsenburg-colour-176Neither Yorkshiremen nor television chefs are generally known for their retiring modesty, but Brian Turner manages to confound both stereotypes. Soft-spoken and self-effacing, in his new series My Life On A Plate (Monday, BBC One, 3.45pm) he dispenses with razzmatazz and lets the food – and his guests – do the talking.

The charmingly simple format explores the memories of the stars appearing in each episode, with the emphasis on the dishes from their childhood. This welcome addition to the daytime schedules will feature Nigel Havers (Tuesday) and Nicholas Parsons (Wednesday), but the opener offers a particular treat – a revealing encounter with Mary Berry.

The Great British Bake Off star returns to the city where she grew up, Bath, and tells how it was only her detestation of Latin and maths that led her to instead take up domestic science aged 12. Reward came quickly in the form of praise from her father that Mary repeats with beaming pride even almost 70 years on: ‘He said that my treacle pudding was as good as Mum’s.’ Mary was, by her own admission, a naughty child, and exhibits mischievous glee as she regales us with a tale of the time her dachshund took a dip in the Roman baths.

Meanwhile, Turner cooks up ox-tongue pie and bread-and-butter pudding with custard to take Mary’s taste buds on a trip back in time. Those of us taking notes at home will be pleased with the clarity he brings to explaining the recipes.
