It seems to be the perfect marriage… but is it?

Written by Ben Felsenburg
Ben-Felsenburg-colour-176What if everything you thought you knew about the man you love was wrong? Crusading lawyer Maya (Sophie Okonedo) is a woman who seemingly has it all. Her superb intellect and fearless campaigning have taken her to the peak of her profession, and now she’s on the verge of making history by becoming the first black Director of Public Prosecutions. Nick (Adrian Lester) is all you could hope for in a modern husband and father: handsome, loving, dependable and happy to take care of household duties and look after the children. But he hides an extraordinary secret...

Written by the brilliant Peter Moffat, whose career includes the much-missed Silk and also Criminal Justice, Undercover (Sunday, BBC One, 9pm) offers a rare combination amid modern TV drama. The unfolding plot carefully portions out teasing mystery and compelling revelations in the manner of the most entertaining tales. But we are also presented with characters to care about deeply, whose emotions and experiences illustrate what a difference the colour of one’s skin can make – even in modern Britain.

And underneath it all is an old-fashioned vehicle for a couple of powerhouse performances from two true stars: Okonedo pulls off that most difficult trick of making an entirely goodhearted character interesting; while Lester deploys the command and presence of one of our leading performers.

The Durrells (Sun, ITV, 8pm)

Too Many Cooks (Mon, C4, 5.30pm)
The heat is on in the kitchen, as amateur cooking couples battle it out in a new daytime competition show.
