Britain’s Favourite Dogs

A countdown of the UK’s most popular pooches

Written by Ben Felsenburg
Ben-Felsenburg-colour-176Now here’s a poser you could debate long into the night: which, do you think, is Britain’s favourite dog? There are more than 200 breeds to choose from, and sorry, but ‘all of them’ – tempting though it may be – is not an option. We’ll all have our choices, so it’s fascinating to discover the top 10 resulting from a survey of 1,000 owners in Britain’s Favourite Dogs (Wednesday, ITV, 8pm).

Let’s not give away too many secrets, but it’ll come as little surprise that tastes have moved on since a century ago – when Pomeranians and Great Danes made the list. Even the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, which hit peak popularity shortly after the Queen’s coronation, has fallen away: just 274 were born in Britain in 2014. But there’s much to relish in today’s fashionable breeds, from the golden retriever – apparently judged the happiest – to the German shepherd, which very definitely has a bark far worse than its bite, with a recordbreaking audio level of 108 decibels, quite at odds with the gaily affectionate nature owners swear by.

Spare a thought for the humble mongrel, which makes the cut and is exemplified by the bundle of frisky energy that is Rabbit, a mix of collie, terrier and Ewok according to owner Alice, who delights in its loving bond with her six-year-old daughter Violet. Still, there can only be one top dog: the one we keep at home.
