Discover Poldark’s Cornwall – back on air 4 September 2016
The award-winning drama will be back on BBC One this September as Aidan Turner returns to brighten up our screens as Ross Poldark. After months of speculation, a third series has also been confirmed with filming taking place, predominantly in Cornwall. Series highlights have included the rugged backdrops of Charlestown Harbour, Lizard Point, Porthgwarra, Constantine Bay, and Porthcothan. Experience some of the best horse riding on Bodmin Moor on a new Poldark Trail with
Hallagenna; explore Poldark country on a two hour guided tour with Koru Kayaking; walk to the filming location of St Agnes Head along the ruggedly beautiful South West Path and take a sunset stroll across Holywell Bay to catch the sunset and see the iconic Gulf Rock, which is the backdrop to scenes in series two. Capital and countryside in Bridget Jones’ Baby – released 16 September
Bridget is back this autumn as we follow her adventures and mishaps into her 40’s. Like the first two films, London will once again play a starring role, with Borough Market (around the corner from Bridget’s singleton flat in Bridget Jones’ Diary) once again featuring as an iconic backdrop. Beyond the capital, the beautiful Oxfordshire Cotswolds plays its quintessentially English part for the location of Bridget’s new-born’s christening at St Mary’s Church in
Swinbrook. Experience Swinbrook life with a stay at the Swan Inn, which was also used as the location for Lady Sybil’s elopement in Downton Abbey. Over in Bucks, the National Trust’s West Wycombe House, which has featured in Downton Abbey, Cranford and countless films, also played its part.

West Bay back in the spotlight – filming underway for Broadchurch Season 3

Join a new ‘Peaky Tour’, Birmingham
The BBC show Peaky Blinders – which tells the story of a gangster family in 1920s Birmingham – has enjoyed phenomenal success since launching in 2013. Set up for the programme’s fans by entrepreneur and tailor Adrian Barrows and in collaboration with historian and University of Birmingham professor Carl Chinn, Peaky Tours takes visitors back to Birmingham in the 1890s. Starting at the Old Crown at 7pm and including the Rainbow Pub where the “Peaky Blinder” term was first coined, the tour will give guests an insight into the real characters from the era, which inspired the fictional Shelby gang from the cult drama. Tours cost from £29.95 per person including introduction talk on Birmingham and its history, the walking tour, a drink and Q&A with Professor Carl Chinn MBE.

And some to watch out for in 2017:

‘The Mercy’ to put South Devon on the map, due for release January 2017
The profile of Teignmouth, Shaldon and South Devon is expected to hit new heights in 2017 when
The Mercy, starring Colin Firth film and Rachel Weisz, is premiered early next year.  The film, shot largely in Teignmouth, tells the dramatic tale of Donald Crowhurst's fateful attempt to win the Sunday Times Golden Globe yacht race – a solo around the world yacht race. Crowhurst built his boat, the Teignmouth Electron, specifically for the race.  The 40-foot (12 m) trimaran, designed by Californian Arthur Piver, was an unproven type of sailing boat for a voyage of such length, however he risked setting sail with her on 31 October 1968 in an effort to gain publicity for his invention, a radio direction finder called the Navicator, that allowed the user to take bearings on marine and aviation radio beacons.  Once committed to the race, Crowhurst mortgaged both his business and home placing himself in a grave financial situation.  The film itself was shot against the backdrop of Teignmouth, its harbour, beach and pier, which were expertly transformed to resemble the 1960s.

Dorset in the spotlight with two major film releases for 2017
Ian McEwan’s acclaimed novel,
On Chesil Beach, is being adapted for the big screen. Starring Saoirse Ronan, the story is set in 1962 and focuses on two newlyweds with very different social upbringings as they embark on their honeymoon in Dorset. The 18 mile long Chesil Beach is one of Dorset’s shining stars, forming part of the Dorset and East Devon World Heritage Site, known as the Jurassic Coast. The pebble beach stretches from Portland to Abbotsbury, continuing on towards West Bay and is one of the UK’s most unique natural attractions, and a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. Filming is already underway in Swanage and Weymouth for a second major release, Dunkirk, an epic World War II drama due for release in July 2017. The all-star cast includes Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Sir Kenneth Branagh and Harry Styles.

Annihilation, filmed at Holkham beach, Norfolk, due for release 2017
No stranger to a film crew having starred in the likes of Shakespeare in Love, filming has been underway this summer at North Norfolk’s beautiful Holkham Beach for Sci-Fi film
Annihilation, due for release in 2017. Directed and written by Alex Garland, Annihilation follows a biologist (Natalie Portman) as she signs up for a dangerous expedition into an environmental disaster zone where the laws of nature no longer apply. Everyday visitors to Holkham will be greeted with a far more welcoming scene, thanks to its endless stretches of golden sand backed by one of the largest nature reserves in the country.
