How to...Find a good pet sitter

Take a look at this top tips on how to find the perfect pet sitter for your animal.

Written by Pawshake
• It is important for a pet-sitter to have obtained first aid qualifications for pets. Whether they take your pet for a walk or just look after them at home, they should be able to react appropriately in case of emergency; for example, in the event of your pet choking on small objects or suffering from allergic reactions and irritants. A good pet-sitter should be able to administer medication. For example, because cats are prone to diabetes a cat pet sitter should be well prepared and aware of how best to administer injections at adequate times.

• Sitters should have experience understanding pet behaviour when taking care of animals. Animals (or even specific breeds) have their own distinctive character; for example they may be very outgoing and sociable or nervous around strangers or other animals. Pet-sitters should also take into consideration the environment the pets were raised, whether they grew in a big garden or mainly indoors, or their training development.

• Experienced pet owners should be aware of the amount of pets they can have at one time and how they interact with one another. Do the pets like being surrounded with other pets or do they feel nervous or shy around them? The recommended maximum number of pets a pet-sitter should take care of at the same time is four, and they should also take into consideration the space that is available to them.

• A good pet sitter should ask appropriate questions and be inquisitive. They should know if the pet is neutered, up-to-date with vaccinations, if they have any allergies, special eating habits, or if there’s any peculiar behaviour they should be aware of. In addition to that, they should always have several contact and emergency numbers.

• Pet-sitters should take the initiative and arrange a meet and greet so they can get to know the owner and interact with the animals. This is there chance to be clear about what services they are providing and what they may need from you.

• Pawshake provides reviews for the pet-sitters. Always look out for ratings, good or bad, they will tell you how good this pet-sitter is at their job and what kind of services they have provided so far. Their profile should always be concise and informative, a trusted pet sitter is one who provides detailed information about their living space, their routines and will even display pictures of their homes to give you a clear idea of where your pet will be taken care of.

• A good pet-sitter should always have insurance. This is something Pawshake provides to all its community members, whether they are pet-sitting as a hobby or part time job.

• As a last point, a great sitter will be aware of all legal requirements when taking care of pets. The home boarding licence is an important legal requirement that pet-sitters are urged to acquire. This is provided by the local council and is awarded once a council member arrives at the pet-sitters home and carries out a detailed inspection to ensure that their home is of a high enough standard to board a pet.
