Women sleep worse

It's now scientific proof that women find it harder to get to sleep, thanks to our natural body clocks

Written by Katrina Schollenberger
Ever hopped in bed at night, perhaps read a few pages of a book or a magazine (The Lady, an obvious choice) only to be interrupted by the sound of your partner snoring away minutes later?

It's a mystery how men can fall asleep as soon as they hit the pillow. But science has discovered the reason why men find it easier to get to sleep than women. In fact-it's not a new phenomenon.

Extensive research carried out by Canadian scientists, including monitoring a group of 25 men and women's sleeping patterns for 72 hours, found that woman's circadian clock runs two hours ahead of men's.

The circadian cycle controls our sleeping/waking pattern- essentially, when we feel tired at night and what springs us out of bed in the mornings.

Those that took part in the sleep study were kept awake for an hour before given the opportunity to sleep, and their temperature, response to alertness levels and melatonin (the sleep hormone) were monitored. From these results the laboratory gained insight into the women's circadian rhythm, finding that they are between 1.7-2.3 hours ahead of the men's.

Research by the National Academy of Sciences suggests men may have a part to play in deciding what time a couple heads to bed, therefore the man will find it easier to fall asleep. The Times reported that due to the woman's circadian clock running ahead of the man's, women are 50 per cent more likely to have trouble sleeping, and may be more prone to insomnia.
