Diamonds are a girls best friend

Women expect Mr Right to spend over £1,000 on an engagement ring

It's a massive moment, many women have been dreaming about it since they were a little girl and have high expectations. But what if it's not perfect? New research shows that the average woman expects her wedding proposal to be at a landmark in her home city, with a dazzling ring costing on average £1013.

The study of 2,000 women who have yet to be asked the big question also shows that women expect a proposal after just 25 months of dating. And when he does pop the question, Mr. Right should drop down to one knee, in a private setting – but shouldn't worry about asking for parental permission first.

Craig Bolton, Executive Director from luxury British jeweller Mappin and Webb, who commissioned the study, said: "The results of our survey should give the men of the UK plenty of food for thought.

The winter and Christmas period is a very popular time of year for proposals to take place, so if any men or women are thinking of popping the question now's the time to do it. A happy marriage starts with a happy proposal, and the ring is something that absolutely has to be perfect – whether it's a flawless stone or a bespoke ring with some personal meaning to the couple."

It seems the risk of having your partner choose the most important piece of jewellery you will ever wear is too much for most women. Three quarters would like to help pick their own engagement ring, which will be a relief to the men who aren't sure of their partners' tastes. Over a third felt that if left to his own devises, their man would make the wrong choice when it came to the ring.

The most popular type of ring is still the solitaire, a round cut diamond on a white gold band – with just one in twenty opting for an unusual stone like a ruby or emerald. Interestingly, less than one in five women has every detail of their perfect proposal mapped out in their mind – which gives men quite a lot of room for error. Half of women say they don't care where their proposal takes place, but men can play it safe by choosing the beach or a famous landmark to get down on one knee.

It seems there is a general shortage of romance around as an unlucky 35 per cent of British women say their partner isn't romantic. Shockingly, a quarter of women say that they'd probably say no if a proposal didn't meet their romantic expectations.

If any men out there are struggling to plan the perfect proposal complete with the perfect ring Craig Bolton recommends consulting Mappin and Webb. "The Mappin and Webb By Appointment service enables clients to experience a very personal and collaborative approach to creating their dream engagement ring. Recognising that an engagement ring is one of the most important purchases of a lifetime, the Mappin and Webb By Appointment service enables clients to be at the heart of the design process, so every ring has its own unique and personal sentiment of love."
