How To Stay Visible While Working Out Outdoors

Maintaining a running regime can help improve your mood. Keep your running safe and stay seen on dark roads by incorporating hi-vis technology into your autumn running wardrobe.

It's Time to Reflect
Unlike pale fabrics, reflective materials bounce light directly back to the source without scattering it (known as retro-reflectivity); this means anyone shining light at you (e.g. a driver) can see you much more easily. Let drivers know you're there at night by incorporating reflective features into your running kit; look for base layers, jackets and tights with reflective details in their logos or seam piping which will reflect in headlights. The more reflective features you have, the better, especially if you have them at as many different angles as possible. Also bear in mind that reflectivity on moving parts, such as arms and legs are easier to see than on the torso.
Most running shoes now feature reflectivity too, and the principle is the same – the more the better. This season Asics' Lite Show range offers some great looking trainers to keep you visible at night.

Fluoro Daze
Bright fluorescent clothing is great when running in overcast conditions with poor light (i.e. most of the time in Britain!) Headlights don't pick up reflectivity in daylight, so all good hi-vis running apparel often combines reflective features with bright fluorescent fabrics for day-to-night visibility.
The sun's UV rays react with fluorescent colours to make them appear to glow in daylight. This effect increases in low light conditions such as in fog or at dusk – but remember that fluorescent colour does not show up in darkness.

COMP1

There are some great ranges designed specifically for maximum visibility such Ronhill Vizion which has a core range of high-vis apparel and accessories. Again the more hi-vis fabric, the better your visibility, ranging from contrasting panels through to all over fluorescent fabric. If trusty fluorescent yellow isn't your thing, studies indicate that oranges and pinks perform equally as well – if not better.

Lighten Up
A running LED light is an instant way to ensure visibility to other road users. These can clip directly onto a pocket or waistband, or can sit on the arm or leg with a wrap around strap. When choosing an LED, consider how many hours of illumination it will provide, waterproofness and the amount of visibility it will deliver. Half a mile of visibility is a good distance and a blinking light is more noticeable as drivers perceive this as a hazard. If you're running on unlit roads, a head torch is also a sensible option.

Stay warm and dry
As well as staying visible, it' important to stay warm too as the nights get colder. Layering your running clothing is key; it allows you to start fully clothed and take off layers to avoid sweating too much and losing vital body heat. You'll warm up quite quickly, so if you're leaving the house toasty warm, you've probably got too much on – it's best to start off feeling slightly chilly. A long-sleeved running top and running tights topped off with a wind-proof running jacket, hat and gloves make for a good winter running wardrobe. Go for light-weight, breathable, windproof and waterproof fabrics that wick moisture away from your body.
