New Year, New Start, New You

Five ways to kick start your career search and make 2017 your best year yet.

Written by Amy Cosgrove
I love this time of year- it's full of the promise of new opportunities and possibilities. It also encourages us to reflect on what we have achieved both in our personal and professional lives the previous year. If you've come to the conclusion that 2017 is the year that you want to push your career forward then it's time to get proactive!

Know what you want. The most rewarding career moves are almost always long thought out and carefully planned. Every career move that you make needs to bring you closer to your career goals so you need to be certain of what these are before you move forward.

Revisit your CV. Your CV and cover letter is the vital first step towards your dream job. Take the time to make sure everything is up to date and as polished as it can be.

Don't wait for a vacancy. Never be afraid to approach companies directly, just like you companies are assessing their options for the New Year and that often includes budgets for recruitment. You won't always get a reply but you have nothing to lose and everything to gain so be brave and make contact!

Network. Whether it's attending industry events, talking to friends and colleagues or even just building your connections on LinkedIn- it is worth getting creative with your job hunt. The hidden job market is real- some of the best jobs are never even advertised.

Make full use of recruitment agencies. Although they should never be relied on exclusively, a decent recruitment consultant can be an excellent source of knowledge. Recruitment is expensive and time consuming and more companies than ever enlisting the help of agencies in their search for the perfect candidate.

Ultimately, if you want your dream job then get proactive. Don't wait for things to happen- make them happen!
