The Waldorf is an Edwardian hotel that sits beautifully in sparkling lights at the end of the Strand near Somerset House in London. I had always wanted to go in, but never had the opportunity until the Gourmet Girls were invited to review their stunning Homage restaurant.

starter

Upon arrival, my guest and I were swiftly seated. It took us a while to browse the menu as we took our time admiring the ballroom-like décor of the room, complete with chandeliers, mirrored walls and velvet chairs. We decided to start with salmon terrine and celeriac carpaccio with a garlic truffle cream paste. To be honest, I had only had ever tried blended celeriac before, so the more concentrated flavour of the carpaccio serving wasn't my favourite. This was nothing to do with how the restaurant prepared the celeriac, however, but more to do with my personal taste.

main

For mains, my guest ordered the risotto with cherry tomatoes while I had the 8oz ribeye steak with salad, onions and béarnaise sauce. I also ordered a side of olive oil mash, as nothing compliments a steak better than mash, in my humble opinion. The steak was cooked to perfection, the seasoning was so moreish. The olive mash was equally as great and very fluffy in texture, just how you'd hope. I also swiped quite a few bites of my guest's risotto. Cheddar and white wine were evident in its ingredients, as well as a bit of balsamic vinegar, which made for an interesting contrast.

desert

We sipped through a lovely bottle of white wine, and I tried the Walforf-tini: a Martini made with Gray Goose Vodka with ginger bitters, then stirred with Noilly Prat dry vermouth in a golden shaker and garnished with edible gold. The attentive bartender then mixed it to make it a little sweeter for my palette, and it was wonderful.
To finish the evening meal we ordered a cheese platter and tiramisu. The presentation was beautiful and the portion was light. My guest and I sat and chatted for a while longer after our plates were cleared, as the ambiance of the restaurant was very calming and sophisticated. I'd have to say I'm going to be dreaming about that steak and mash for a while, and I'll be eagerly flipping through my diary to plan my next visit.
