Here’s Why You Should Call Your Grandparents

Social Isolation and Loneliness amongst the elderly are problems that are far too common and have serious implications. The fact that 2 out of 5 older people in the UK (4 million people) report the television as their main, if not only, form of company--reflects the extent of loneliness and solitude people experience.

Is your grandparent or elderly loved one 1 of these 4 million lonely people?

A lack of human contact or connection can increase a person's likelihood of mortality by 26%. Further, loneliness is as detrimental to a person's health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day or complete physical inactivity and obesity. Thus, loneliness does not only affect a person's emotional and mental well-being but their physical health as well.

If these facts and statistics are not enough to convince you of your responsibility to end loneliness amongst your elderly loved ones, the simple fact that you owe it to them to care for them should be. It is easy for us to become preoccupied with our own lives and forget about our grandparents. It may even be easy for us to forget how they spoiled us, loved us and cared for us when we needed them most. But, it is our responsibility to step up and be there for them when they need us most. Leaving grandparents to a life in which they are isolated and alone is a punishment they do not deserve.

Battling Social Isolation and Loneliness can start with one simple step - pick up the phone and call your loved ones today. It will mean the world to them to know you took time out of your day for them.

Join Vida in battling Social Isolation and Loneliness by sharing this video with the hashtag #endloneliness to spread awareness on the effects of social isolation on the elderly.

Remember - Christmas may be over, but your loved ones' need for companionship isn't.
