Spring decluttering

Time for a spring home declutter? Follow these tips by Victoria Harrison, editor of, a platform for home renovation and design

Spring cleaning is a great excuse to declutter and get your home in shipshape for the warmer months. Whether you have five minutes or 50 to spare, there is a lot you can achieve in that time. Finding ideas to keep clutter at bay is a very popular topic on Houzz, and it's little surprise that 'storage' is a top search term on the platform.

Here are the Houzz community's best tips to get your home ready for spring:

Many users are fond of the KonMari method, which they say is particularly good for keeping wardrobes organised. They praise Marie Kondo's folding method, which can free up a lot of shelf space. One 'Houzzer' who followed the method was able to get rid of more than 35 bags of surplus items!

Yasmin Chopin, an interior designer on Houzz, suggests taking an annual toy inventory to reduce toys to a minimum, depending on your space. If you (and your children) can get into the habit of letting go of toys when they are no longer regularly used, it will make the play area easier to maintain.

Over half of homeowners on Houzz who are investing in storage as part of a kitchen renovation, cite that they are motivated to reduce clutter, and 79% want to make better use of their space. To achieve this, they are opting for cutlery organisers, deep drawer organisers and pull-out waste and recycling cabinets. For those with tiny kitchen spaces, consider hanging rails for pots, pans and utensils. We have seen many such ideas popping up in the Houzz photo directory.

When it comes to cleaning products and techniques Houzzers are a creative bunch. One Houzz user suggests putting cottonwool earbuds or a tooth brush to work as tiny cleaning brushes for getting into small crevices. Baking soda seems to be a popular cleaning tool, with Pat Oliver, another interior designer on Houzz, using it to clean the bath. A 'magic sponge' of the type that only needs water to remove marks, is also a popular suggestion on Houzz.
