The Diary of Miss Darcy Bustle: 7 July

The Lady’s lovable office dog tells all

Written by Miss Darcy Bustle
Monday
I have had an Instagram account @MissDarcyBustle for several months but it is a competitive world out there. Some dogs are just much better at posing. It’s really hard to look good all the time. The editor says that I need to improve my ‘likes’. Thankfully someone has sent me details of a wacky new gadget called Flexy Paws which clicks onto a smartphone camera and dangles a treat over the top so that the dog or cat being snapped looks right at the camera. Once a picture has been taken, the treat can be removed from the gadget’s spring-loaded clamp and offered as a reward – well if there are treats to be had then I’m ready for my close up!

Tuesday
Conservationists at San Diego Zoo are using dogs to help cheetahs suffering from anxiety- related conditions in captivity. The zoo has been using therapy dogs since 1980 and although they tend to be larger dogs, I think I could persuade them to let me lend a helping paw. They need outgoing and affectionate dogs…let me near those cages.

Wednesday
I love music as much as the next Dachshund; Beethoven, Handel, Strauss, all the German greats. And as office dog I sometimes get to go to some wonderful cultural events with the editor but not even I would be as bold as a little dog in Turkey who clearly fancied a night out and strolled onto the stage while the Vienna chamber concert were playing Mendelssohn and sat down next to the strings section. The musicians carried on despite a few struggling to hide amused smiles. There are lots of people on social media saying all orchestra performances should come with a dog from now on and I’m more than happy to rise to the challenge.

Thursday
Everyone loves a happy ending and I really do love a happy ending when it features a dog. Rescue dog Roxy has become the first Staffordshire bull terrier to be trained as a police explosives search dog in Wiltshire. She is one of the 14 dogs PC Lee Webb has helped to train as police dogs over the past five years and apparently her skill at sniffing out hidden tennis balls was what made him know she would be ideal. Well done Rox. Maybe you’d like to come for tea?

Friday
I take doggy fashion very seriously. Kath at work has knitted me several lovely jumpers, and hopefully once summer is over she’ll knit me some more –but I must keep up with this year’s fashions after all. I’ve got my eye on the new Disco Dog, a jacket with LED lights so I can shine even more than I already do – and best of all, if I run off too far, which often happens if I see a bird and want to chase it, the lights can be changed by someone’s smartphone to read: ‘Lost Dog’ so people will know I may need help. With just 80 being made I need to act fast to snap one up.

See you next week! Instagram @missdarcybustle
