Beautiful Cornwall

After the Christmas hubbub, catch your breath in beautiful Cornwall

Written by Wendy Gomersall
A healthy holiday at this time of year doesn’t have to mean exhausting yourself hiking up snowy mountainsides or sliding down ski slopes.

Taking a gentle stroll in scenic surroundings, breathing in a refreshing sea breeze, will bring a glow to your cheeks – and I’ve discovered an idyllic place to do it.

Mawgan Porth, between Padstow and Newquay on Cornwall’s north coast, is a perfect seaside spot, with a magnifi cent bay, dog-friendly sandy beach and splendid cliff -top walks.

The small town has all the restaurants, pubs and shops you need, too – we tucked into the best fish and chips we’ve had for years at The Blue Fish Bar.

There are great hotels as well. The Bedruthan Hotel and Spa is a comfortable, family-friendly retreat, while sister property The Scarlet is particularly nice for couples. Both have gorgeous views over the bay and are near walking trails and cliff paths – Bedruthan Steps, a beautiful stretch of coast with dramatic rock formations, is not far away.

You can cycle on the After the Christmas hubbub, catch your breath in beautiful Cornwall famous Camel Trail from Padstow to Wadebridge, just fi ve miles away, or play pitch and putt or crazy golf. Surfing is also popular, but not in January, I’d imagine.

For more indulgent R&R, retire to the Bedruthan Hotel’s very nice spa, which recently started offering treatments using gorgeous Ila organic products, featuring natural plant and mineral ingredients.

The spa has a deep hydro pool, cedar sauna, eucalyptus steam room and lavender caldarium, too, so it’s a wonderful place to recover after a bracing walk. The Bedruthan has an outdoor pool, too, but it’s maybe a bit too nippy to indulge at this time of year. There’s also a really nice little shop offering lovely local paintings and crafts – I always feel better after some retail therapy.

You certainly won’t starve here – both the Wild Café and The Herring serve fresh, modern dishes with imaginative twists, using ingredients from Cornish farmers and fishermen. Try the crab bisque or fish curry, chilli-smoked ray wing or roast Cornish duck breast. The Herring was named Restaurant of the Year at the 2014 Cornwall Tourism Awards.

The Bedruthan offers a range of accommodation options, including separate two-bedroomed villas with their own terrace and loungers and roomy sea-view apartments sleeping up to six.

Before retiring for the night, why not enjoy a nightcap in the bar. I recommend a Cornish Breeze – a refreshing cocktail featuring elderfl ower fizz, vodka, cloudy apple juice and cranberry juice.

Rooms at the Bedruthan Hotel and Spa cost from £135 per night, including breakfast: 01637-860860,

Rooms at The Scarlet from £195 per night, including breakfast: 01637-861800,
