Set Jetting

Become a set jetter with a film-inspired holiday at home or far away

Written by Wendy Gomersall
Blockbuster films and small-screen TV series have a huge influence on the places we visit, and holiday companies off er a wide range of tours and experiences inspired by them.

The route to Middleearth: New Zealand owes much to Bilbo Baggins and friends. Not surprisingly, the final film in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy, The Battle Of The Five Armies, has been a smash hit. New Zealand was the sole filming location for The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings films, with more than 150 locations used. And what spectacular scenery it is – Ian Brodie’s location guides are packed with information.

Discover The World offers an epic 21-day journey showcasing the diverse locations used in The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit fi lms, from £2,951 per person, including flights. The price also includes: B&B in boutique hotels, Interislander ferry crossing (Premium Plus cabin), car rental, several guided location tours including Hobbiton Movie Set, 4WD Safari of the Scenes tour, Dart River Jet Boat in Queenstown, and an overnight cruise.

New Jungle Book: A new version of The Jungle Book, featuring Scarlett Johansson and Idris Elba, is due for release this year. The setting for Rudyard Kipling’s book, first published in 1894, was an area in the Central Provinces of India, now known as Madhya Pradesh. To coincide, tourism specialist Village Ways has introduced wildlife experiences that also help to provide a livelihood for local communities – tourists are given accommodation managed by them.

For example, the new five-night Walking With Tigers trip, from £696 per person (for a party of two to three), features accommodation close to Pench National Park, which you will explore by jeep (including a tiger reserve) on the look out for jackal, wild boar, sloth bear and, of course, tigers.

Available until March, the break can be combined with other accommodation by Village Ways and includes full board, internal flight from Delhi to Nagpur, overnight rail journey, road transfers, two jeep safaris, guiding, afternoon Delhi exploration and airport transfers. International flights extra.

Closer To Holmes: In celebration of London’s most famous detective, The Bloomsbury Hotel is offering a special Sherlock Holmes package with tickets to the current exhibition at the Museum of London. Sherlock Holmes runs at the museum until 12 April and includes Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1886 A Study In Scarlet notebook, containing the first-ever lines of a Sherlock Holmes story, and a Belstaff coat used in the BBC series starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

The detective and Bloomsbury are connected in a number of ways: Russell Square Gardens was featured in the first episode of Sherlock. Key sites, including 221b Baker Street and 2 Devonshire Place, where Conan Doyle’s medical practice was located, are easily reached.

The Bloomsbury Hotel’s Sherlock Holmes package, from £295, includes an overnight stay for two, full English breakfast, two tickets to the exhibition, Sherlock Holmes afternoon tea and a miniature book.
