Channel Islands

Head to the Channel Islands, our glittering jewels off the coast of France, for a year of fabulous events

Written by Wendy Gomersall
CHANNEL ISLANDS HERITAGE FESTIVAL
This spring is a great time to pop over to Jersey or Guernsey, as the first Channel Islands Heritage Festival will run from 3 April to 11 May, commemorating the 70th anniversary of the islands’ liberation from German occupation in 1945. Over the course of ve weeks there will be special events at historic sites, occupation-themed walking tours and other activities, culminating in Liberation Day on 9 May.

On Jersey, the day will start with a Freedom Parade led by bands and military vehicles, proceeding from Liberation Square to People’s Park – where a tea party will be held for islanders who lived through the occupation, or were deported, evacuated or on active service. Later on, there will be music and other entertainment, food and craft stalls, and a spectacular reworks display over St Aubin’s Bay.

LIBERATION INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL
Involving both internationally acclaimed stars and local artists, this Jersey-based festival runs from 7 to 17 May. Events include the Berlin Philharmonic Octet at Jersey Opera House on 9 May, with letters and tales from the occupation narrated by Bergerac actor John Nettles. Closing the festival will be Jazz at Hamptonne, featuring Clare Teal and her trio. This year’s theme explores liberation, artistic freedom and the power of music to liberate the spirit.

JERSEY WAR TUNNELS
A week of events at this fascinating location starts on 4 May with a vintage fair. There will also be talks by occupation veterans, wartime cooking demonstrations, a candlelight tour and more. The tunnel complex, excavated by forced labourers, is a permanent reminder of the German occupation of the island.

OCCUPATION TAPESTRY
The 12 panels of the awardwinning tapestry, which tell the story of life in Jersey during the Second World War and is created by over 300 islanders to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Jersey’s liberation, is housed in a gallery at the Maritime Museum in St Helier. There are now interactive touch screens and audiovisual presentations. On 9 May, work begins on a new panel to complement the tapestry.
