City Break

Enjoy a capital break in the best city in the world. After all, it’s not far away

Written by Wendy Gomersall
What better way to celebrate St George’s Day on 23 April than by booking a minibreak in one of the most exciting cities in the world?

I love London – not just for the shopping, the shows and the restaurants, but for all its great attractions – from the River Thames to the palaces and museums – there’s plenty going on.

A ‘ƒflight’ on the London Eye is unforgettable, so treat yourself to a special Champagne Tasting package, including a private capsule (three to 20 guests), priority boarding, champagne tasting from the House of Pommery and entry to the London Eye 4D cinema experience.

Long-time favourite Madame Tussauds is always entertaining, and is launching a new, multimillion-pound Star Wars attraction on 16 May, which recreates some of the ” lms’ most powerful moments, with heroes and villains from episodes I to VI.

Do take a break for afternoon tea – splash out at The Ritz or head for Café in the Crypt beneath St Martin- in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square, where homemade cake, coffee and all the trimmings are served beneath the 18th-century brick-vaulted ceilings.

If you feel adventurous, the ArcelorMittal Orbit at the Olympic Park in Stratford, the UK’s tallest sculpture (262ft), designed by Turner Prizewinning artist Sir Anish Kapoor and structural designer Cecil Balmond, is launching abseiling experiences – the next takes place on 24 May.

After an exhausting day sightseeing, you’ll need a comfortable holiday home in which to relax, and I’ve recently discovered the joys of luxury serviced apartments: all the pleasures of a top-class hotel, with even more personal attention and privacy.

Cheval Residences has eight locations in London, all of which provide a dedicated concierge service, a welcome organic hamper, maid service, twice weekly bed linen and towel change, and fitness room.

Cheval Phoenix House, off Sloane Street, is very comfortable and well placed for the shopping in Knightsbridge and Chelsea, and access to London’s best museums. Neil the concierge organised everything I needed, from sorting out a taxi to offering advice on the best restaurants and booking tickets for a West End show.

The residences range from studios to one- and two-bedroom apartments – perfect to share with friends – with well-equipped kitchens, Samsung TVs with satellite, movies and sports, and WiFi. The beds have dreamy linen and there are Aveda toiletries. There is even an in-room spa company, Return to Glory, offering an indulgent, blissful massage before bedtime.

Apartments at Cheval Phoenix House cost from £260 per night. Return to Glory in-room spa treatments (from £75 per hour) can be arranged via the Cheval Residences concierge. or for more information:
