Lounge like a Roman in Bath’s new luxury hotel and natural spa

Written by Wendy Gomersall
Bath is one of my favourite English cities, and the ideal destination for some Christmas shopping. With the opening of the elegant Gainsborough Bath Spa, there’s an even better reason to visit the World Heritage City on a luxurious minibreak. The spa is part of the YTL group of hotels and resorts, which includes worldfamous escape, Pangkor Laut in Malaysia.

The elegant 99-room hotel occupies two Grade II listed buildings with handsome Georgian and Victorian facades in the heart of the World Heritage Site. The setting is just a few minutes’ walk from the swanky citycentre boutiques and restaurants and is also opposite the Thermae Bath Spa. It is the UK’s first and only hotel to have exclusive access to natural thermal waters.

The rooms are delightful, with elegant decor, free Wi-Fi, complimentary minibar and even a Nespresso machine. There is also a modern restaurant serving delicious food, a lounge and chic bar, and, of course, there’s a spa.

Guests are entitled to complimentary access to the Spa Village Bath, a little heaven on earth, with thermal pools, saunas and a steam room, in addition to a fitness centre and 11 treatment rooms. The therapies range from scrubs and acupressure to special underwater massages and luxury facials. The Renew with Rose, an anti-ageing, rejuvenating facial, is fabulous.

There is no shortage of sightseeing – the Roman Baths and Pump House, the Royal Crescent and the Palladian Pulteney Bridge, which spans the Avon, are musts. I liked Sally Lunn’s Historic Eating House and Museum where you can learn all about Bath buns.

Before you visit, check the list of festivals and events at – upcoming events include the annual Bath Mozartfest (13 to 21 November), Get Closer Week at Haynes Motor Museum (14 to 22 November), where a selection of vehicles will have their bonnets open for you to inspect, and Bath Christmas Market (26 November to 13 December). The Christmas Market features more than 170 beautifully decorated wooden chalets lining the streets, stuffed with local artwork, jewellery, festive food and drink, toys, clothing and more. When you return laden with shopping, the friendly staff at Gainsborough Bath Spa will be on hand to arrange for your packages to be taken to your room.
