Spa Spa Away

Venture afar to discover how spas across the world offer contrasting treatments and settings.

Written by Cat Young
My introduction to spas came later on in my life.

house-590-2ESPA Life at Corinthia London offers a fully integrated approach to wellbeing, with four floors of alternative therapies and beauty treatments

While friends enthusiastically exalted the merits of relaxing in hydrotherapy pools, Jacuzzis and having massages, I was not to be swayed. The thought of lying somewhere and relaxing in peace? Most definitely not! But as the years went by I started to wonder what I might be missing out on.

house-590-3The spa in Estonia’s Viimsi Hotel includes Finnish saunas, steam baths, and two pools

Then, while attending a friend’s birthday, I found out what I had been missing, and oh how I wish I’d been less stubborn and more gung-ho sooner.

Since then, without hesitation, I have braved the hammam for a Turkish bath while on holidays abroad – great preparation for unwinding and creating the ultimate tan.

house-590-4The Dorchester Spa in London exudes Art Deco glamour combined with a contemporary edge and features a chandelier of South Pacific pearls

But even more enjoyable have been the times I have spent luxuriating in some of the select spas. At the last spa day I went to I found it difficult to leave the premises after nearly five hours – and that was without any treatments!

house-590-5Mondrian London’s Agua Bathhouse And Spa is renowned for its personalised therapies

Now I too extol the benefits and merits of a top spa. You really can’t beat taking time out for yourself and enjoying good service, quality treatments and, where possible, amazing surroundings. If there was ever a time to seek out a spa then it is now, especially after – dare I say it – the C word (yes, Christmas).

Six-Senses-Spa-2At the heart of The Alpina Gstaad is the hotel’s Six Senses Spa. Inspired by Asian traditions in wellbeing, it has indoor and outdoor pools, with skilled practitioners offering a host of treatments

Cast your net far and wide and delve into the possibilities offered by luxurious sanctuaries to rest, recuperate and regenerate.

house-590-7SHA Wellness Clinic sits in a picturesque Alicante vicinity in front of the Mediterranean Sea

To sit outside in cabana-style seating while looking out over a lake, or float on the heated water of an outdoor pool while taking in an Alpine landscape, or dipping a toe in a gold energy pool

… no hesitation. Yes please!
