Lace up your hiking boots for a walking holiday to cherish

Written by Wendy Gomersall
Herriot way
To mark the centenary of the birth of James Herriot, the author of All Creatures Great And Small, holiday specialist Sherpa Expeditions has launched a new trip taking you through the Yorkshire Dales, where Herriot lived and worked as a vet. It’s a six-day version of the James Herriot Way, considered by many to be ‘the best short longdistance walk in the UK’. Priced from £440 per person and with departures between now and October, the trip includes accommodation, most meals and experienced guides.

Italian challenge
Hedonistic Hiking offers a nine-day holiday exploring Italy’s Basilicata region, starting and finishing in vibrant Naples. The hiking is challenging, with some taxing ascents and descents, but the rewards include good food and wine, plus highlights including Pollino National Park and the Unesco World Heritage city of Matera, where accommodation will be in rooms converted from the town’s original cave dwellings. Priced from €2,795 (£2,175) per person allinclusive, trips depart on 8 and 18 October. Flights to Naples not included.

Byron trail
Walks Worldwide’s sevennight trip to Albania follows in the footsteps of the poet Lord Byron. The walk starts in Llogara National Park, moving through forests towards the Karaburuni peninsula and Mount Çika. Other highlights include the fortress of Ali Pasha of Tepelena and the Unesco World Heritage Sites of Butrint and Gjirokastra. It departs 17 June and the cost (from £1,099 per person) includes flights, transportation, most meals and a tour leader.

Autumn Dolomites
The Adler Dolomiti hotel in Ortisei, the capital of Val Gardena, Italy, provides a good base from which to explore the glorious Dolomite mountains. The hotel’s Autumn Sunshine walking specials (from 18 September to 4 December) include two daily guided hikes – one of which is an easy-going leisure hike – with a packed lunch for when there is no mountain hut to stop at en route, backpacks, telescopic poles, and maps, plus a snack on your return and a wine tasting. A half-board, threeday break starts at £342 per person; flights to Innsbruck or Verona not included.

It begins with one night in Stockholm before guests are taken to Trosa, where a variety of established paths lead guests northeast past lakes, coastal regions and nature reserves, hiking between 10km and 15km per day, staying each night in one of a series of charming guest houses. Luggage is transported for guests between each night’s accommodation. Departures between June and August.
