South for a touch of Scarlett

Celebrate 80 years of Gone With The Wind

Written by Wendy Gomersall
It’s 80 years this month since the publication of Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With The Wind, the famous tale of Scarlett O’Hara and how life in the Deep South was changed for ever by the American Civil War. The award-winning book, set in Clayton County and the elegant city of Atlanta, Georgia, went on to sell more than 30 million copies worldwide. It also inspired the 1939 blockbuster movie of the same name, starring Vivien Leigh as the headstrong Southern belle Scarlett and Clark Gable as the dashing Rhett Butler.

What better way to mark the anniversary than by taking a trip to explore the South’s best-known cities, former plantations and gorgeous old mansions?

Start in Atlanta, where Mitchell was a lifelong resident. Old Atlanta was mostly burnt to the ground at the end of the war. Sightseeing highlights here include the Margaret Mitchell House & Museum, of course, and the Martin Luther King Jr National Historic Site, which commemorates the life, work and legacy of the civil rights leader. Take a food or film tour of the city, too.

Move on to Savannah, the oldest city in the state of Georgia, where you should take a tour of the Owens- Thomas House, considered one of America’s finest examples of English Regency architecture. A trolley tour through the city’s historic squares is also a must-do.

In charming Charleston don’t miss a horse-drawn carriage ride past prestigious Battery Park and Rainbow Row with its 13 antebellum houses and the Old Exchange Building. Magnolia Plantation and Gardens captures perfectly the genteel atmosphere of a graceful Southern home; another highlight of the region is a visit to the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, America’s largest home, built for George W Vanderbilt in 1895. Learn about the wealthy Vanderbilt family and their famous guests on a guided tour of this National Historic Landmark, then wander through the beautiful gardens and grounds. Insight Vacations is offering fans of Gone With The Wind the opportunity to explore Georgia on its luxury eight-day Southern Glamour itinerary, with departures in September.

The trip costs £3,550 per person, based on two sharing, and includes return flights, seven nights’ luxury B&B, seven additional fine dining experiences, VIP sightseeing, private airport transfers and the services of a tour director. Departures on 9 and 16 September.

Special features of this holiday include the chance to try the delicate art of weaving Charleston sweetgrass baskets and a Lowcountry dinner of regional cuisine, with Southern hospitality and entertainment at the Thomas Bennett House.
