Amazing cruises great and small

A trio of terrific trips to different corners of the globe and to suit every budget

Written by Wendy Gomersall
Go Galapagos
The best way to see the Galapagos Islands is on a cruise aboard Santa Cruz II. Accommodating 90 passengers in 50 cabins from singles to triples, the expedition ship is built for adventure but still comfortable, with a lounge and library, restaurant serving great food, and a bar and lounge. Check out itineraries visiting different islands: the Galapagos are home to some amazing wildlife including boobies, sea lions, giant tortoises, marine and land iguanas, frigate birds, albatrosses, penguins, fur seals, cormorants and flamingos, but they are not all found on every island. Naturalist guides lead small groups for tours, snorkelling, glass-bottomed boat trips and kayaking.

Journey Latin America offers a nine-day holiday with four nights aboard Santa Cruz II, two nights relaxing at the wonderful Finch Bay Eco Hotel and two nights and city tour at Casa Gangotena in Quito, Ecuador, costing from £4,665 per person, including flights, breakfast and full board on the cruise.

Sail in the sun
SCIC Sailing operates a fleet of privately owned, traditionally built timber yachts operating mainly out of Turkey. Varying in size and number of cabins, and accommodating from six to 16 guests, each yacht follows a different itinerary featuring ancient archaeological sites, remote villages and deserted coves around Turkey and the Greek islands, with a professional crew guaranteeing stress-free sailing. The highlight of a trip is gliding through the water with the sails up. The price encompasses most meals and drinks, including wine and spirits. There are also themed cruises: cookery, archaeology, hiking or even singing.

A seven-night cruise costs from €949 (around £750), excluding flights from the UK (to Bodrum/Milas, Dalaman, Kos or Rhodes, depending on the itinerary).

Best of Burma
The legendary Strand Hotel in Yangon has launched a sister property, the Strand Cruise, a 27-cabin luxury river cruiser traversing Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady River on threeand four-night itineraries between the ancient cities of Bagan and Mandalay.

The luxury cruise uses private moorings close to landmarks along the river, including an exclusive mooring overnight at Ava on the journey from Bagan to Mandalay, allowing passengers access to the beautiful temple of Maha Aungmye Bonzan after the crowds have departed.

Audley Travel offers a seven-night package, including a three-night journey between Mandalay and Bagan on the Strand Cruise and two nights in a deluxe suite at the Strand Yangon, from £2,570 per person, including return international and domestic flights, transfers and all excursions on the cruise.
