Where to find hotels with extraordinary outlooks

Maison La Minervetta in Italy is a boutique hotel perched above Sorrento, with 180-degree views over the fishing harbour. It’s just outside the main town away from summer crowds but only 15 minutes’ walk from restaurants, bars, shops and the quayside. Suites cost from £230 per night.

The Lakeside Hotel at Newby Bridge, Windermere, has two lovely Executive Lodge Suites away from the main building. They are in an idyllic setting just 20 yards from the water’s edge and have their own lake frontage and jetty where guests can moor a boat or use one of the hotel’s rowing boats. The suites have a spacious bedroom and separate lounge, as well as a private patio. Prices from £299 per night for two people, with breakfast.
The Sounds Retreat is a luxury lodge for two on the edge of Queen Charlotte Sound, Marlborough, in New Zealand. There’s a deck overlooking the water, as well as an in-house chef, gym, biking, fishing and wine tasting. The Pier at Harwich is a hotel on the town’s historic quayside and is well known for its two restaurants, the Harbourside and the Ha’Penny brasserie, both serving fantastic seafood. It also has 14 individually furnished rooms with sea views. Prices start at £117 per night for two.
The Sea Garden Cottages, Tresco, Isles of Scilly, includes nine one-bedroom cottages available on a self-catering, B&B or dinner, B&B basis. Tresco Island can be reached by ferry or by air from Penzance. The one-bedroom cottages, each of which has a double bedroom, balcony or terrace, have sea views and cost from £150 per night when self-catering.
The 112 rooms and suites at the Oberoi Amarvilas hotel in Agra, India, come with a view of the Taj Mahal, which is 600 metres away. Built in a style reflecting Moorish and Mughal architecture, the resort has terraced lawns and fountains.
