Judy Garland's 'Wizard of Oz' dress sells for £302,000
The blue gingham dress that Judy Garland wore in the 1939 classic 'The Wizard of Oz' fetched the highest price of any item at an auction of Hollywood memorabilia in Beverley Hills last night. The checked pinafore dress, crafted by MGM costume designer Adrian Greenberg, was bought by an anonymous buyer for £302,000; auctioneer Darren Julian said that the sale was in line with estimates. Other highlights of the two-day auction included Julie Andrews' green floral dress from 'The Sound of Music', which sold for £24,150, and a racing jacket belonging to Steve Mcqueen that sold for £31,500. These figures do, however, pale in comparison to the £2.8 million spent on Marilyn Monroe's 'subway' dress from 'The Seven Year Itch' last year.

Hollywood moguls discuss 'Casablanca' sequel
Seventy years on from the release of 'Casablanca', Hollywood producers are said to be considering a sequel. The 1942 classic, that starred Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, boasts three Oscars, a spot in the United States Film Registry, and the Writers' Guild accolade of best screenplay ever written. Cass Warner, a friend of Howard Koch, the late screenwriter of the original film (and grand-daughter of Warner Bros co-founder Harry Warner), is now allegedly attempting to negotiate permission for a second instalment of the iconic piece of cinema. Previous attempts at a sequel, such as the Warner Bros project 'Brazzaville', have never made it past treatment phase – but this version, that will be entitled either 'Return to Casablanca' or 'As Time Goes By', already appears to have gathered more momentum than any preceding attempts.

Mick Jagger's secret love letters go on sale
Ten love letters written in secret by the 25 year-old Mick Jagger to the American-born singer Marsha Hunt shall be auctioned at Sotheby's on December 12th. According to the Sotheby's book specialist Gabriel Heaton, the letters - penned while the Rolling Stones lead was performing in Australia - provide a rare glimpse of a "passionate and articulate" young man, "very different from Jagger's public persona". Hunt was the inspiration for the 1971 hit 'Brown Sugar' and the mother of Jagger's first child; she now needs to raise funds in order to repair her house in France. "The letters speak for Mick at an incredible juncture of our lives," she said, in an interview with The Guardian. Currently aged 66, she told the newspaper she hoped the buyer would recognise that they were purchasing a piece of history.

Dame Helen Mirren's new play about the Queen does not receive the royal seal of approval
In light of her award-winning portrayal of the Queen in Stephen Frears' 2006 film of the same title, Helen Mirren was expected to receive a warm response from Buckingham Palace when she agreed to take on the role of the monarch once again for a West End production entitled 'The Audience'. Centred around the Queen's weekly meetings with her prime ministers, the play has met with consternation in royal circles on account of its use of her image on the programme and on promotional material. A spokesman for the royal family said: "We ask companies not to use the Queen's image in their advertising material. We felt the use of the Queen's portrait for this play breached this code and suggested they might like to use a different image. We have no issue with the play itself". 'The Audience' will see Dame Helen Mirren, aged 67, portray the 86 year-old Queen from her accession aged 25 through to the present day.

Whitney Houston receives MTV Global Icon award
MTV paid tribute to Houston's illustrious career at the EMA ceremony in Frankfurt last night. Bruce Gillmer, executive producer of the 2012 EMAs explained that "when we choose the global icons, we try to look for an artist who has sustained a substantial career spanning an extended period. Whitney had one of the greatest voice of all time and her music lives on". Whitney Houston is only the third recipient of the award; the previous two were Queen and Bon Jovi. The honor for Houston is the last of a string of tributes to the recording artist. Her sudden death earlier this year came shortly before the 2012 Grammy Awards.
