Olympic Opening Ceremony Wins Award
Danny Boyle's Olympic Opening ceremony has been honoured by the Evening Standard. Boyle received the 'Beyond Theatre' award, presented by Victoria Pendleton and can add the award to his already impressive resume including a Bafta and an Oscar. Of 15 million applicants, 7,500 volunteers were chosen and lent their efforts to the display that depicted Britain's history, from green and pleasant land through industrialisation up to the modern day with spectacular style and grace. The ceremony attracted the biggest UK and USA television audiences in Olympic history and prompted the BBC to rebroadcast the event.

Female Farmers on the Increase
The Office for National Statistics has revealed that female farmers are on the increase. There are currently 23,000 female farmers in the UK. However, this year has seen an unprecedented increase of 6,000 despite the exceptionally difficult weather conditions whilst the number of male farmers stands at 119,000 and has seen a decrease this year of 5,000. Peter Kendall, Head of the National Farmers Union has told that changes in technology have made farming a much more open field, admitting that "I could take you to three farms that are run by Lady Farmers and often they make me look a fool, they make a much better job than I do of it".

Non Melting Chocolate
There is nothing worse than opening your favourite chocolate bar to reveal that it has descended into a gooey mess and is no longer edible. Now, Cadbury scientists based in Bourneville, Birmingham have developed a chocolate which they confirm will remain solid even when being left in temperatures of 40C for up to three hours! However, the product will not be sold in the UK, with new owner Kraft targeting the hotter climates of Brazil and India for the product, claiming British weather is not warm enough to warrant the product.

Dresden, Germany holds host to a new building that is literally singing in the rain. The chiming house, designed by sculptor Annette Paul and designers Christoph Rossner and André Tempel, was commissioned to take part in an arts project called the 'Courtyard of Elements'. The building is adorned with a complex system of drains and funnels that combine to transform the house into a musical instrument. The remarkable house has become a tourist attraction, but one that can only be appreciated by those willing to brave the weather!

William and Harry Pledge support for HIV Charities
The two Princes look set to emulate the work done by their mother, Diana, in championing the cause of HIV and aids through the Terrence Higgins Trust. They have urged that we must 'pick up the sword and continue to fight', and help to eradicate the stigma that still blights sufferers today. As one of the leading HIV charities, the Terrence Higgins Trust's 30th Anniversary highlights that the fight for HIV is far from over. The chief executive of the trust, Sir Nick Partridge added, "We are incredibly honoured to have this message of support from their royal highnesses".

No more Downton for Dan
Dan Stevens, who plays the honourable Matthew Crawley and beau to the feisty Lady Mary, is reportedly not returning for the fourth series of Downton. It is not yet clear how he will depart Downton, however his appearance has been confirmed for the two hour Christmas special, which will see the Grantham family travel to Scotland. The on screen chemistry of Mary and Matthew that left viewers on the edge of their seats for almost two series will certainly be missed by devoted fans. The third series provided a rollercoaster ride of emotion, and it seems, that series four is set to follow in its path.
