BBC Sports Personality of the Year Announced
The shortlist has been announced and our Olympics leviathans will be battling it out later this year to be crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year. 2012 has proved a golden year for British sport and the winner, announced on the 16th of December, will face stiff competition for which none of the finalists can prepare. Finalists include Tour de France Winner, Bradley Wiggins; Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and US Open Winner, Andy Murray. Both Charlotte Dujardin and Laura Trott, double Olympic gold medal winners this year, have failed to make the finalists, indicating the intensity of this year's battle. The level of competition for the prize this year warranted the BBC Director of Sport, Barbara Slater, to extend the shortlist from 10 to 12.

UK Education ranked 6th in the World
The British Education system that has long been a source of national pride has been credited this week as the 6th best in the developed world. The ranking may come as a shock to some, seeing Germany and the USA in 15th and 17th place, respectively. The top spot went to Finland, with South Korea and Hong Kong hot on her heels. The report compiles international test results and graduation rates between 2006 and 2010 to ascertain its rankings, however, it can be said to be slightly outdated as the last two years of academic achievement are not taken into consideration.

Ben Ainslie to retire from Olympic Sailing
The four time Olympic Gold medallist has confirmed that he will not be competing in Rio to make a bid for five consecutive gold medals. Ben Ainslie, 35, has competed in five Olympics and is the most decorated Olympic sailor of all time. He is also fourth in Britain's all time individual medallist list, with one silver and four gold's. Ainslie admitted that the decision to withdraw had been 'tough', but he would struggle to replicate the feeling of winning at a home Olympics. He will now turn his attention to the Americas Cup campaign.

Out of Africa Auction
The Oscar winning epic, 'Out of Africa', that saw the paring of Robert Redford and Meryl Streep sizzle on screen, is having one of its most iconic props auctioned off. The yellow aircraft, flown by Redford's character Denys Finch Hatton, is set to fetch up to £120,000 next February in Paris. The plane which is a 1929 De Havilland Gipsy Moth can reach speeds of up to 100 mph, and is fondly remembered by film lovers as soaring above the beautiful Kenyan Savannah with Streep and Redford aboard.

The Australian Red Sea
One of the most famous beaches in Australia, Bondi Beach in Sydney has fallen foul to mysterious algae that have turned the water red. Mystifying locals, it is said that the algae is reacting to unusual conditions and their side effects have already affected fish in the area. Although there is no toxic danger, algae is high in ammonia and thus can cause skin irritation and authorities are warning people to stay away from the water. It is hoped that the colour will have dissipated by the weekend when the temperatures are set to soar.
