Woman's best friend becomes birthing partner
St Martin's Hospital in Bristol recently allowed a pregnant woman to have her dog, Barney, in the room as she gave birth. Barney, thought to be a Labrador, is a certified Pets as Therapy dog, and regularly visits the wards to comfort patients. The mum-to-be was allowed the granted the unusual request after Managers at the Hospital agreed that he had a 'calming presence' and would attend the labour as a therapy dog, and not as a pet.

Schoolboy resorts to Tractor-power to make exam
Are you among those who think that schools are too quick to close on snow days? 16 year-old Will Richardson would be the first to agree with you. The rural schoolboy, from Barnard Castle, County Durham, was so determined to get to his geography exam that he borrowed the family tractor to do so. Will travelled the 8-mile stretch, even picking up a stranded school friend on the way, to ensure that he didn't have to re-sit the exam in May.

The judge who fell asleep
We've all been inclined to shut our eyes at one point or another, whether on the train home, curled up on the sofa, or perhaps in a courtroom? A Russian judge found himself in hot water after falling asleep during a trial, and reportedly playing on his phone, before condemning the defendant to five years in prison. The judge made the decision to rule himself out of the retrial which will follow, because the situation had left him with a conflict of interest.

A Right Royal Report
Prince Charles got in touch with his youthful side yesterday when he encountered teenagers working with the Princes Trust in South London. The Prince happened upon the excited youths whilst visiting the Oval Cricket Club, and agreed to pose for photos before continuing his tour.

Whilst the heir to the throne gets youthful, Kate Middleton is getting sporty. It has been revealed that the Duchess of Cambridge has accepted honorary membership of the All England Club. Both Kate and her sister Pippa, are both keen tennis players, and the Princess was a regular at tennis events last year, memorably tearing up (along with the rest of country) following Andy Murray's emotional speech at Wimbledon.

Results from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds annual Big Garden Birdwatch Survey revealed that fewer than half the number of mistle thrushes is being seen in British gardens than ten years ago. The RSPB hope that the results of this year's survey, to take place this weekend, will provide an update on mistle thrushes, and important information about other birds.

Meanwhile, information from the Kennel Club shows that English Setters are making a comeback. The information is welcome news after statistics released this time last year revealed that numbers of the breed were so low that they were deemed at risk of becoming extinct.
