Picasso painting of muse sells for £28.5 million
A Picasso painting has been sold for £28.5 million at a Sotherby's auction last night. The painting, titled Femme Assise Pres d'une Fentre (Woman Sitting Near a Window), which was created in 1932, depicts the artist's muse and lover Marie-Therese Walter.
Picasso initially kept Marie's identity shrouded in secrecy, whilst her face was always veiled or abstracted, to avoid rousing the suspicions of his wife, Olga Khokhlova. However, when the artist began to produce portraits of his muse, and put them on display at Galerie Georges Petit in Paris and at Kunsthaus in Zurichhis in 1932, his wife grew suspicious, and Marie's name was revealed.

Now your favourite book can make you feel fat
Reading Bridget Jones Diary, you cannot fail to notice one dominating subject – Bridget's weight. She obsesses over it, as do many other protagonists in the nation's favourite chick-lit. However, a study completed by Viriginia Tech suggests that the protagonists' weight worries also affect the reader.
The report looked at "the effect of protagonist body weight and body esteem on female readers' body esteem," and concluded that women grow anxious over their image, when reading about a character's insecurities.
Authors of the report distorted passages of novels, and gauged women's responses to them. When reading about a slimmer character, the reader reported that they felt self-conscious and unattractive, whilst a character with low self-esteem would make the reader worry about their own weight.

Stars Gather for the Oscar Nominees Luncheon
Oscar hopefuls gathered yesterday for the 85th Academy Awards nominees luncheon. Amongst the stars were Bradley Cooper, who has been nominated for Actor in a Leading Role, whilst Jessica Chastain who is hoping to win Best Actress, also attended.
The event was an opportunity for the nominees to give a taste of what to expect for the big event itself. Jessica Lawrence stole the show in a strapless white Chloe dress, but joked that she'd be "wearing sweatpants" for the award ceremony. Meanwhile Anne Hathaway donned a simple black The Row dress, and is hoping to win the award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

The Stolen Golden Cookie is Returned
Germany's very own Cookie Monster has returned a stolen gold cookie, which was taken from Bahlsen biscuit's Head Quarters. The cookie, which hung above the building, has been on display since 1913, until it was stolen and held to ransom last week. The thief declared that the cookie would only be returned if the company donated biscuits to sick children in Hanover hospitals. Mr Bahlsen agreed to the arrangment, and the cookie has since be returned, when it was discovered tied in a red ribbon, hanging from a monument of a horse in front of Hanover University on Monday.
