Nail varnish sales match lip stick sales for first time.
For the first time the sales of nail polish rivals the sale of lipstick in the UK. Research by consumer analysts, Mintel, reveals that both had a market value of £229 million in 2012. This change in female purchasing has been led by the nail polish industry developing a wider and more varied product, with an increase of 400% in new colours being available since 2008. As well as a wider variety of colours and longer lasting products, the arrival of American style 'nail bars' throughout the UK has also made having a manicure affordable.

Mintel's research noted over half of women wearing make up and nail varnish said it improved their own self esteem, with 80% noting they carefully removed make up daily. A third said they also felt more professional when made up. Over 72% of people buying nail varnish are under 24, only 7% of us are purchasing fake nails.
The joy of being able to create the same look as those spending a lot of money is one reason that nail varnish sales have soared. The price of the Princess of Wales manicures created outrage when they were revealed in her lifetime - as the spending of senior Royal Family figures became more accountable.

The Duchess of Cambridge was introduced to the nail services of Mayfair's Jo Hansford by the Duchess of Cornwall, with prices ranging upwards from manicures at £37, and pedicures from £50. Bi monthly treatments would lead to an annual bill of over £2000.

Princess Madeline of Sweden is expecting her first baby with her banker husband, Chris O' Neil.
The couple married in Stockholm in a ceremony attended by European royalty. The baby is due in March 2014, and will be a cousin to Princess Estelle, the daughter of the Crown Princess Victoria. Princess Madeline works at the World Childhood Foundation in New York.

Monaco's Charlotte Casaraghi is also expecting her first baby in December, with her actor fiancé Gad Elmaleh. The daughter of Princess Caroline of Monaco studied philosophy at the Sorbonne, and is an international show jumper. She has recently featured in Gucci adverts. Her choice of the divorced M. Elmaleh is very much a love match, he is already the father of a twelve year old boy, and is one of France's leading actors and comics. M. Elmaleh is wealthy in his own right, and a linguist who speaks Hebrew and Arabic. They are to marry in the Autumn and have been seen buying baby clothes on the Italian island of Capri, where they were enjoying a summer cruise recently.

The tiny principality of Monaco celebrated the wedding of Princess Caroline of Monaco's oldest son Andrea last weekend, to his partner of over a decade Tatiana Santa Domingo. The couple welcomed their first child Sacha in May, who was born in London. Tatiana has been warmly welcome by the Monaco Royals, and was credited with being a supportive, discreet and stabilising influence on her new husband.

Children to Triumph over turnips
Children rarely rave about the vegetable content of their diet and half of mothers find getting children to eat is the most stressful time of their day. Birds Eye have commissioned an author to write stories directly on the plate, and then will be giving away 250, 000 plates through UK retailers nationwide from today.

The idea is the bright pictures and printed stories about food will encourage children to eat their greens. The author & poet Roger McGough is working on the campaign with Birds Eye to make teatimes more enjoyable for families, and follows research showing how challenging it can be for parents. With 86% of children not finishing their food, and turnips and okra cited as the vegetables children dislike most, it will be interesting to see if this idea can help.

Children learn through play and this idea provides a visual and interactive way to hold little children's attention. Small children learn through repeating the same stories, so the idea is a clever one in cognative terms.

A new female sleuth to re ignite Poirot
The copywright holders of Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot have decided to commission another female criminal writer, Sophie Hannah, to write a sequel, almost 50 years after the original inspiration was created.
Ms. Hannah was hand picked by Agatha Christie' grandson. The book is yet to be written but will be appearing next year, but it is an honour that Ms. Hannah recognises to follow in the footsteps of a literary giant like Agatha Christie.

Salinger novels published for first time posthumously
Five new books by the American author JD Salinger - who died in 2010 - are to be published in the coming years. It was his wish and this coincides with a detailed documentary about his life. It took the Los Angeles script writer, Shane Salerno, a decade to make the film about Salinger, and $2 million of his own money. It was premiered in America, in Colorado, last Monday night.

The five new Salinger titles will be published between 2015 and 2020. The books will focus on themes of the second world war, and religion. Mr Salerno noted that the post traumatic stress disorder that Salinger suffered after the war is key both to the content and tone of his writing, and perhaps to his most famous literary creation, Holden Caulfield. This creation eptimosise disjointed American youth. Mr. Caulfield reappears in a short story sequel with the apt title 'The Last and Best of the Peter Pans', 50 years after wrote Salinger this is in 1962.
