We scour the news so you don't have to

Autumn feast after a winter of despair.
2013 had the coldest March for 50 years, but the late Spring hid the glory of a real summer. This weather pattern has impacted the not just the bugs and beasts around us, but also the budget airlines that will impact our access to the ski slopes.

The summer sun encouraged us to enjoy the joys of the garden, a walk in the warmth after work, and to have a drink sitting outside the local with friends. It also made the Southwest of England enjoy a tourist boom, with holidays rental homes and camp sites filling up. This however meant that as the need to book a break in Tuscany or Spain was put on hold, the airlines were left with empty seats. The result now is that their dive in profits for carriers such as RyanAir, has made it necessary to cut the Winter flight routes, making flights for ski breaks potentially more expensive.

Thanks to the delightful wetaher,  fruits and berries are weighing down bushes and boughs now, with bumper harvests of blackberries, so at least the birds are able to eat well before migrating, their travel instincts being perhaps less whimsical than ours. However, this abundance of berries could be a sign that we are in for a cold winter.

Be true to yourself and your charm
Polkerris is a little Cornish town, near the industrial St Austell that is struggling like much of Cornwall with unemployment. In early summer a sweet and cheery teenager was waitressing in a mid range Polkerris eatery. Her name is Rebecca Chew and she was finishing a singing course, and was kind and gentle with customers.
Polkerris has a nice beach and a film was being made with some scenes shot locally, Time Out, directed by Richard Curtis. The film is about time travel and stars Love Actually's Bill Nighy, and Canadian star Rachel McAdams. Post work the director took his own family for food near the set, and it was Rebecca Chew who took his order. Her Cornish warmth was quietly noted. While Rebecca forgot about the incident and worked on in the restaurant by the beach, a month later a call came through for her.

Rebecca was given the ultimate tip for being nice to the Curtis children, a cameo in the film. This will hopefully help her portfolio as she continues with her singing career, and it is a reminder that being nice to those who cross your path actually can lead to both a happy exchange of chat, ...and the odd film role. There is a nice saying that on the way up in your career you should always be good to those around you, and with Richard Curtis a well established director, he has not forgotten this. As the saying goes, be nice to pigeons, as one day a statute may be made of you.

Modern Legends
Beauty, charisma and glamour are forever fascinating and Grace Kelly has continued to hold the imagination long after her death. Her exquisite natural beauty, intelligence and sense of fun make her timeless, and in 2014 another film starring Nicol Kidman will be released here.

Ancient Greeks used to believe great men and modern heroines literally became stars in the night sky. While we have lost our oral story telling traditions with the advent of the cyber age, the re visitation of lives of those who made an impact continues.

Nicole Kidman and Grace Kelly had some characteristics in common. Both women were born into strong close families, were brought up active in sports, and became very successful actresses that were dressed by the world's most famed designers. Both women lavished attention on their own children and drew a strict distinction between what was for public consumption and what was private.

While this film has been disowned by the children of Princess Grace of Monaco, Kidman has said that it catches the Princess in essence. The film about Diana Princess of Wales and her love affaire with Hasnat Kahn, see Kidmans' friend and fellow Antipodean Naomi Watts as Diana.

Canine heaven in the land of fruit and nuts
Some lucky pooches are now being given 'human grade' dog food in California. The 'Honest Kitchen' dog food company is producing doggie dishes that include free range chicken, and delicacies like sweet potatoes and greens. The US Food and Drug Administration have awarded the company a rating that means their food is also of the standard required for human consumption.

Lucy Postins, 38, samples all the 'Honest Kitchen'dog food range herself and notes that dogs like humans benefit in terms of energy and health, from not being fed cheap rubbish. And California leads the world with Silicon valley, health trends and Hollywood. The celebrities are often seen indulging their dogs, who sometimes appear to be part of their fashionable accessories.

However back in the UK, there is a Yorkshire expression relating to dogs, typically forthright 'You should not marry them.' This means not to over empathies with your canine pet. Indeed in the vast majority of the world dogs are not permitted inside homes, and in some far Eastern countries the dog them self becomes the tasty snack.

In 1949 during the Communist take over of China, as war and famine ravaged the people, it was discovered that the wife of a General Kai Shek was having dog food flown in from the States. This may be urban legend, but certainly the California dog trends are not. Indeed California may be the bread basket for America, but it is known as the land of fruit and nuts for more than just the products.

NHS use new £5 Heart Attack Tests for Women by Christmas
The University of Edinburgh has led research into more subtle and keener diagnostic testing for female heart attacks. The most amazing thing about the new methods is the cost, at under £5. The new tests will be in use in A&E by Christmas. One problem with detecting female heart disorders is that often women react to heart problems without chest pains but with back and abdominal pain, that they then ignore. Last year 31 000 women died from heart attacks, and 43 000 men. The gap in statistics has narrow as women's lifestyles have become more similar to men in terms of work and economic pressures.
