Marin Alsop becomes the first woman to conduct the Last Night of Proms
The Last Night of the Proms has not had a female conductor for the 118 years it has been running but this weekend Marin Alsop changed this track record. In a speech she made that night to an enthusiastic crowd, Alsop noted that she is 'quite shocked that it can be 2013 and there can still be firsts for women. Here's to the second, third, fourths, fifths, hundredths to come.' On a previous occasion, Alsop recalled being told by her violin teacher as a child that 'girl's don't do that' and commented that the acceptance of female conductors showed that society is 'moving on', becoming comfortable with seeing women in ultimate authority roles.

A British Team are the first to climb a Himalayan Mountain
Caroline McCann from Glossop and Matthew Jones from Salford reached the summit of the Cha Ri Mountain on 24 August, having climbed a huge 6,046 m (Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain, is 1,344 m.) Doug Briton, a climber from Linlithgow, in West Lothian, led the twelve day expedition after he discovered that the mountain was listed as unexplored. Conditions were challenging with McCann commenting that 'at night we were getting snowstorms, hailstorms and frost...the atmosphere was incredibly dry and everything we did was an effort.' However, the team descended safely, having discovered a glacial lake during their expedition.

Howard Jacobson to re-write Shakespeare's 'The Merchant of Venice.'
Howard Jacobson is joining Margaret Atwood, Jeanette Winterson and Anne Tyler in signing up to re-write a Shakespeare play for Penguin Random House. The Book prize-winning writer wishes to deal with the anti-Semitism in the play, commenting 'for an English novelist, Shakespeare is where it all begins. For an English novelist who also happens to be Jewish, The Merchant of Venice is where it all snarls up.' He also noted that 'Mr Shakespeare probably never met a Jew, the Holocaust had not yet happened, and anti-Semitism did not have a name' and wondered if 'one tell the same story today where every reference carries a different charge?' The re-written plays will become the Hogarth Shakespeare series which is to be published in 2016, the 400th anniversary of the playwright's death.

Tokyo has been chosen to host 2020 Olympic Games
The International Olympic Committee has decided that the Japanese capital would host the Olympic Games in 2020, the first time the city has hosted the Games since 1964. The Tokyo delegation has lobbied intensely for the honour of being host city for last two years and a number of them wept with joy. The Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, said 'I would like to thank everyone in the Olympic movement' and promised that Japan would 'host a wonderful Olympic Games.' Tokyo will become the first Asian city to host the Olympic Games twice. Boris Johnson sent his congratulations and commented that 'I am sure that, like London, your great city will put on an extraordinary event.'
