Exercise More Effective Than Medication
Medical prescriptions might soon include exercise recommendations.

A recent study has shown that exercise can be just as effective at tackling diseases as some medication. Exercise has shown to be a powerful alternative to stroke medication and some heart drugs.

Experts recommend that exercise and medication show be used in conjunction with one another. Though beneficial, exercise should not replace conventional drugs.

Despite this new evidence, prescriptions are continuing to rise across the United Kingdom while exercise rates are falling. Only one in three adults achieves the recommended daily amount of exercise.

Sainsburys' Success
Sainsburys has outplayed Tesco in profits across the last quarter.

In the sixteen weeks leading up to 28 September, Sainsburys like-for-like sales increased 2%. For the entire first half of the year, sales were up by 1.4%.

This spike was due to a combination of increasing popularity of Sainsburys clothing brands and online grocery shopping.

These figures are just another sign of Sainsburys' growing success. In the last quarter, the supermarket giant opened 31 new convenience stores.

Sainsburys is currently the only large supermarket brand to be increasing its share of the market.

There was also good news today for another high street favourite: Poundland. In the last year, Poundland's profits have risen by 15%. A influx of women purchasing cosmetics from Poundland has fuelled this increase.

Cameras Capture Tiger Birth
Cameras at London Zoo have captured tiger Melati giving birth to the first tiger cub in the UK for seventeen years.

The pregnancy, which was kept a secret by the zookeepers, lasted just 105 days. The labour itself took place on 22 September and was over in six minutes.

This is Melati's first cub but cameras caught her taking quickly to motherhood, licking the cub as soon as it was born.

The cub and mother are still being kept away from the public. It is yet to be discovered what gender the cub is.

Developers to Destroy World Famous Tree
A 400 year old angel oak tree in South Carolina is to be cut down unless campaigners can raise the £750,000 required to save it.

The oak is 66ft tall and has a canopy stretching 185,000ft.

Developers are seeking to cut down the historic tree in order to take advantage of the land.

The Angel Oak draws 36,000 visitors every year, despite not being the oldest or largest tree in South Carolina.

Kiri Te Kanawa Meets the Granthams
Soprano Kiri Te Kanawa is to join the cast of Downton Abbey for the third episode of the current series.

Te Kanawa will play Australian opera star Nellie Melba and perform two pieces to the Granthams: the Puccini aria O Mio Babbino Caro and Dvorak's Songs My Mother Taught Me.

The opera singer, whose career spans fifty years, is a huge fan of the series and was thrilled when asked to appear on it. She recorded the pieces live on set and was watched enthusiastically by every member of cast and crew.

The episode will air on 6 October.
