Squid’s not in for championship contenders
Poor weather rendered the annual All England Squid Championships something of a non-event when only one catch was made all day and measured less than half an inch! Anglers travelled to Brighton from across the country to compete in what turned out to be an exasperating endeavour with the stormy conditions turning the waters murky. Of the 74 contenders, Davide Thambithurai from Portsmouth was the only person to reel in a squid and took home the top-prize, ironically awarded to the largest specimen, scoring a brand new fishing rod worth £210. The tiny cephalopod was nicknamed ‘Kraken’ after the mythical sea monster.

Gold digger
Stan Cooper, a treasure hunter, used a metal detector to unearth a valuable gold brooch in a farmer’s field. The fortunate forager was told that the piece is a medieval love token worth up to £25,000. The decoration is dated between 1350 and 1450 and has been authenticated by the British Museum. It comprises two arms conjoined by clasped hands in the shape of a heart and is to be auctioned in Macclesfield, Cheshire later this month. Cooper, who will share the profits with the farmer on whose land he made the discovery, said ‘it really was the find of a lifetime’.

A Royal recipe for success
The Victoria Sponge is a culinary classic and household name. Now, as the Queen’s Jubilee looms near, a national newspaper has launched a search to discover the best recipe for an Elizabeth sponge. Leading cooks and bakers will unveil their Diamond Jubilee cakes of the following weeks and The Times is launching a reader competition to encourage the public to bake their own celebratory treat. Alice Hart has kicked off the proceedings, presenting her triple-decker entry that she says is reminiscent of ‘a summer garden party’. ‘It’s bright and colourful, like the Queen’s many outfits and hat’s’ Hart said.

From Barnsley with love
Tala Lee-Turton, a British Ballerina from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, has won a place on the prestigious four-year training course with the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. The talented teen, who has been dancing since the age of four, has previously danced with the Royal Ballet and appeared at the London Coliseum in the Nutcracker and Le Corsaire.  Tala is due to commence her training in September but unfortunately she won’t be able to go unless she is able to raise funds in excess of £60,000 in order to cover her fees and travel. However, her resolute mother, Sara Turton, is determined that Tala will be leaping to Russia in September come what may.

Swim for it
It has been discovered that Polar Bears are swimming vast distances of up to 400 miles without pausing for a rest. The resilient mammals are said to swim for ten days non-stop at speeds of up to 25mph, while scouring the Arctic for sea ice platforms. More than 50 female bears wore tracking collars and of these, 20 repeatedly travelled long-distance journeys averaging 96 miles between 2004 and 2009. One bear even covered a remarkable distance of 220 miles in ten days. The polar creatures are constantly on the hunt for icy environs which are crucial in enabling them to hunt for their seal-shaped food-source.
