London Zoo conducts annual animal census
The start of the year offers us the chance to sit down, organise our lives and list our resolutions. However London Zoo has a truly hands on approach to the New Year. Today the Zookeepers will take note of every bird, fish, mammal, invertebrate, reptile and amphibian inmate of the capital's zoo (where there are more the 850 species in residence.) The annual count traditionally takes a week to complete and is required as part of ZSL London Zoo's licence. As well as counting the animals, the zoo uses the week to produce an inventory, invite inspectors and conduct research into the health and longevity of the animals.

Today is the best day to find love
This day could be the one! According to dating companies, the first days of January are the best time to set out to find 'the one.' Last year, 2 January was one of the busiest days in the history of online dating with hoards of new members signing up. In the UK one in five relationships are formed online. As well as dating websites, singles events have proved increasingly popular and generate an annual £3.6bn boon to the economy. A study revealed that singles visit dating websites at the start of the year because of New Year's resolution and starting back at work. It is estimated that about 3.2 million people will try online dating this month.

WW1 100th Anniversary preparations begin
This year will see a series of events to mark specific dates in the Great War. The anniversary will take place over the next four years. There are concerns that there will be challenges when it comes to explaining the monumental scale of sacrifice to a generation who will never encounter a soldier who served in the battles. The Royal Mint has released details of new coin designs for the coming year. The £2 coin will have an image of Lord Kitchener's call to arms including the unforgettable phrase 'Your country needs you'. This is the first in a series of Royal Mint coins which will mark WW1 from its outbreak to the armistice.

Royal selfie frenzy
Prince William has joined the Queen and Prince Charles in agreeing to pose for phone photos with members of the public. Madison Lamb, 12, went to see the Royals at Sandringham this Christmas in the hope that she would get a photo with the Queen. However Lamb truly hit the jackpot when Prince William agreed to a selfie with the youngster and, what is more, took the photo himself since Lamb was too nervous to press the button on her phone. Lamb expressed her delight that the Prince came over for a photograph and has put it on her Facebook profile. The Prince said to Lamb 'you can't beat a good selfie on Christmas Day.'

Downton likeness in..Lego
Eric Stevens from Rochester, 23, is a die-hard Downton fan, so much so that he recreated the British Edwardian drama using thousands of Lego bricks. The digital designer used aerial shots of Highclere castle and online floor plans to create the Lego rendition of the iconic Crawley seat. The entire project took 15 hours. The Earl and Countess of Grantham, Branson, Matthew, Bates, Carson, Sybil and Mary have also been realised in the one off creation. Stevens said that the project completely captured his imagination while watching the show last year. After checking to see if anyone had already captured the upstairs/downstairs lives in Lego, Stevens said that he decided to build it as a Christmas gift to his girlfriend who also loves the show.
