Record number of women billionaires on Forbes rich list
The Forbes annual list of billionaires included 25% more women than last year when it was published yesterday, as 42 new female entrants included Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg and gambling entrepreneur Denise Coats. Folorunsho Alakija joined the list as Nigeria’s first female billionaire, while Christy Walton remains the richest woman in the world, and Bill Gates regained the top spot on the list after four years in second place. The richest Briton is Gerald Grosvenor, Duke of Westminster, who owns much of Belgravia and Knightsbridge. Though the US is still home to the most billionaires, China is quickly catching up, with a record 152 Chinese on the list this year.

Signed photograph of Sir Winston Churchill expected to reach thousands at Bonhams
A silver gelatine print of Winston Churchill descending the gangplank of HMS Victory in 1941, signed by the man himself in blue ink for Capt. W.T. Horton, the photographer who captured it, is to be auctioned by Bonham’s on March 19. The photograph was taken on a visit which Churchill made to Portsmouth’s dockyards after they were devastated by an air raid. Horton was an official War Office photographer who travelled around Briton with the prime minister during the war, as well as to the Atlantic Conference later that year during which Roosevelt agreed that the US would join the war. The image has remained in Horton’s family for over seventy years which is expected to fetch up to £4,000 at auction.

Childcare costs more than mortgage repayments for many parents
Parents are frequently paying more for part-time childcare than the average mortgage bill, according to a report published this week by The Family and Childcare Trust. Following a 27% rise in childcare costs since 2009, the average cost incurred by having one child in a part-time nursery and another in an after-school club is now £7,549 per year, while average mortgage repayments are £7,207. According to research published in 2012, British parents spend 26.6% of their incomes on childcare, compared to an OECD average of 11.8%, despite the fact that British children qualify for free part-time education from their third birthdays onwards.

Prince Harry represents his grandmother at Westminster Abbey Mandela memorial
Prince Harry yesterday joined 2,000 guests including David Cameron, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Joanna Lumley at a service of thanksgiving in celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life. The ceremony, which the forth-in-line to the throne attended as a representative of The Queen, was held at Westminster Abbey and conducted by the Very Reverend John Hall, who announced earlier in the day that a ledger stone dedicated to Mandela’s memory would be placed in the abbey. Archbishop Tutu addressed the congregation and thanked the anti-apartheid movement for their support and Labour MP Peter Hain, whose parents were anti-apartheid activists, also offered a tribute.

Bond Girl Gemma Arterton is to appear in Made in Dagenham musical
Gemma Arterton is said to be "beyond thrilled" to be staring as the lead role in a West End musical version of the film Made In Dagenham. The former Bond girl will play Rita O'Grady in the show, which will open at the Adelphi Theatre on 5 November this year. The script is being written by Richard Bean, who wrote One Man, Two Guvnors, and the production will be directed by Rupert Goold, who received critical acclaim for his accounting scandal play Enron. Made in Dagenham tells the story of women at a Ford Factory in Essex who battled for equal rights in the 1960s, and the stage version has been described by organisers as a musical comedy.
