Speculation over who is to replace Bruce Forsyth on Strictly Come Dancing

Following Bruce Forsyth’s announcement that he is to step down from hosting Strictly Come Dancing, speculation has been swirling around his replacement. Anton de Beke, one of the longest serving professional dancers on the show, is currently the bookies favourite; however with Tess Daly still in place as co-presenter, there has been speculation that her husband, Vernon Kay, may move across from ITV to join her. Other possibilities include John Barrowman, Gethin Jones (a former Strictly finalist), Paul O’Grady, Graham Norton and Ronnie Corbett – the latter having stepped into Forsyth’s shoes before. There are also hints that Claudia Winkleman could be promoted from her current presenting role on the Sunday Results Show to act as Forsyth’s replacement.

Cat found in charity shop sofa after being trapped for five days

Ten-year-old Crockett, a grey tabby cat from Essex, has been found after being trapped in a sofa his owners donated to a charity shop. Pauline and Bill Lowe donated two sofas to St Luke’s Hospice charity shop in Grays, Essex, including a three-seater settee which Crockett was trapped in for five days. He was found by the furniture’s new owners, who wished to remain anonymous. He was discovered when they heard “a soft miaow” coming from within the sofa, and found two claws poking out from the material. In order to free him, the material under the sofa had to be ripped. According to St Luke’s, the sofa had undergone the charity shop’s usual routine checks.

Carol Vorderman set to circumnavigate the globe in her own plane

Carol Vorderman achieved her private pilot’s licence in December 2013, and is qualified to fly with passengers. Now, with the hope to follow in the footsteps of her hero Amelia Earheart (aviation pioneer and the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic), she is planning a 29,000-mile challenge in which she would circumnavigate the globe. This will be done in 2015 for yet-to-be-decided charity. Carol Vorderman said of her plans earlier this year that “It has been my dream for decades and if I don’t do it now, I never will. I’m totally obsessed with flying”.

Spanish town uses undercover “poo” detectives to crack down on irresponsible pet owners

Spanish town Colmenar Viejo, a historical town just north of Madrid, is set to use undercover detectives on its streets to catch owners who fail to clean up after their dogs. For the next year, a detective will stalk the streets with a camera to catch irresponsible pet owners. Town officials have confirmed that any video records caught by the watchdog will be handed over to the police, while those caught red handed will face fines of up to €750 (£622). Colmenar Viejo isn’t alone in this as in Barcelona and Madrid, owners failing to clear up after their pets can face fines up to €1,500.

Voice coaches being increasingly sought for anti-elocution lessons

Increasing numbers of young adults are reportedly seeking out voice coaches in an attempt to soften the accents acquired by private education. Young professionals including teachers, police officers and social workers are now trying to hide their expensive educations to get ahead in the workplace. A survey by Trulawn found that 22 per cent of adults have changed their natural accent on occasion, with 4 per cent trying to sound less posh.
